Default Alvin and the chipmunks sells big time for Fox on DVD and Blu-ray

2.6 million copies (DVD + Blu Ray) on the first day of sale ...

http://www.videobusiness.com/article...?desc=topstory

Now we need to know the ratio of Blus in there, I hope more than 10% (one can dream, that would be 260.000 Blus in one day )

I want Alvin & the Chipmincks, but I will wait until it comes down to HALF the current asking price.

Why did HD-DVD fail? Alvin and the Chipmunks has DTS-MA audio and Transformers doesn't.

I think it will be less, it's a kids movie and those don't sell that well on hidef.

Then again the chipmunks could blow the tweeters on your audio setup.

What is 2.6m day one sales likely to translate to for the full week? 5 million? Even 5% Blu-ray would make 250k. 5% of a more modest 3.5m would give 175k Blu-ray. Impressive!

I wonder if that includes WM sale numbers?

It could break 150k on Blu this week, which is more that anyone expected.

The article doesn't say the numbers came from Nielsen, but I don't think Wal-Mart gets counted.

Those are studio numbers, so in all likelihood yes.

If Wal-mart is any indicator then I think its way less than 10% of blu-ray sales. They have a two huge Alvin displays with close to 500 sd-dvds and only carry about 25 blu-rays of the movie. Same way with Enchanted. Sold out of the blu-ray version the first day while they still had a crap load of the sd-dvds. I think blu-ray sales numbers are closer to 1-2% of total sales. You also have to think that the sd-dvd was on sale for $13.99 at Frys and $15.99 at Best Buy for the standard non special version while the blu-ray was $29.99. That is a $15 difference. Huge price gap for a kids movie that a parent gets for their kids.

I would think Blu would come in at the 3-4%, maybe 5% mark. All of my local Best Buys had 5 standard Blu, and 5 Giftset Blu..

Where I got mine, they had 1 giftset left (I got it), and 1 regular Blu left. So, while it definitely sold well, it is a kids movie that will really only do good on DVD at this point.
