I enjoy a good laugh, but for humor like this to work it has to be based in fact. I had Firefox, OpenOffice.org, and Google Talk, and all continued to work fine when I upgraded to Vista right after it was released. The only issue I encountered at all was Firefox wouldn't save the fact that you'd made it the default browser, which was solved by running it once as an admin.

Microsoft does a lot of stupid things, but, believe it or not, they actually spend a ton of time and manpower on keep apps working, to the point that they do crazy things like load in an app and on-the-fly replace some of its instructions to fix problems bugs in the app that are manifested in the new OS.

It's hypocritical when Mac people bash Microsoft for app compatibility, because not only has the Mac been much, much worse, but it's basically their philosophy that if an app isn't written correctly and an OS upgrade exposes a flaw that causes it to break then that's not Apple's concern. Microsoft has this massive chunk of app compatibility code that gets shipped out with every version of Windows to try to fix problems like that.
