Default Discussions of politics/religion

Ok so far I have discovered that we cannot discuss the following:
1. Politics regardless the context. Banned. I personally don't give a rats ass about current US politics but the topic in general is of interest to me and we are bound to come across the topic when discussing movies, actors ect... It is part of everyone's life.

2. History that involves how politics evolved. Banned. Give me a break here.

3. Religion. Banned. Again this is part of the lives of the majority of people on this planet. It is also something that is bound to come up when discussing movies.

I'm sure there are other topics that have burned some of you here.

Here is an idea, how about creating a set of rules based on an agreed upon community standard? Examples would be no bullying, harassment, hate speech, trollbaiting etc... That is pretty cut and dry in my opinion.

People that would break that standard regardless of topic would get punished. Punishment should be for flagrant disregard for the community standards such as vicious attacks against other members regardless of topic. Locking or moving threads should be enough in most cases.

With all due respect, the idea of banned topics will no longer wash now that blu-ray has won the format war and people googling blu-ray will inevitably come here to ask questions. Those people will want to ask questions about Charton Heston, Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, The Passion of Christ, Born on the 4th of July, Dick and Patriot. Shall I go on or do you all get the point? We should either allow adults to discuss these topics or not bother discussing movies at all.

Blu-ray is no longer just some small website dedicated to blu-ray but it is now the premier destination to discuss blu-ray titles and because of this dramatic change in it's role, the management must take a long and hard look at their rules.

I think the admins should either face up to their new responsibility or sell the site to a group who will.

If you want to ban anyone, ban people who do the attacking of others based on their religious, political, gender or ethnic affiliation. Stop punishing everyone in a bogus PC facade of being "fair". We are no longer in elementary school.

To paraphrase Robert De Niro, what is this, amateur night? Big sites need to have bigger staff and rules that appeal to a larger audience.

BTW. If the issue is a matter of anonymity breeding immaturity, why not institute age verification via a credit card for regular members? How about a "club" membership with additional privileges such as coupon codes from vendors like Amazon?

The policy is in place for a reason. People come here to discuss Blu-ray related topics, not politics or religion. Those particular subjects are divisive issues that add very little to this website. There are other forums on the web if you want to discuss those topics.

Religion and political issues ARE discussed in relation to BD movies here. It is a fine line to walk. One must be carfull to keep it relevant to the movie topic at hand though. Not easy to to always. Veering off to personal preferences on each issue cause thread closures.

I understand the OP's frustration as there have been several topics about religion I have read on this board that required some strength on my part to not ring in on. Unfortunately this site is frequented by some real morons, and its best to just leave certain topics taboo, so as to create a place of amiability.

By morons would you happen to be talking about someone who is trying to get my post deleted???? If not, I would like to believe that it is about someone who is too sensitive and trying to get my post deleted. Censorship bad!

Agreed. This goes for some of the political posts as well. There are other forums that accept that kind of back and forth. I agree things can be discussed (movies with religious or political undertones) carefully and still be allowed. But it's tuff when said 'morons' are so apt to add their threadcraps.

I got a google search of the various forums for these topics to help you out

Free speech is where it's at. So long as the comment isn't a direct malicious attack on another user, there shouldn't be reason to ban... as long as it is on the topic of the thread in some way. I have received warnings/infractions in the past only because somebody else took my general statement personally. Had the reactionary post(s) of those readers been approached from a more stable and mature perspective, I feel that said warnings/infractions would not have been issued.

Now, it's time to cue all of those nay-sayers who will counter my free thinking opinion. Personally, I don't want to be a brainwashed peon of the blue collar society seeking to protect a subliminally induced need to protect a totalitarian future.

HAHAHA... Too true!

Funny thing is how people love the film so much and don't necessarily understand why. It speaks to the supressed individual that is in all of us.

EDIT: I just realized that ANY CONVERSATION regarding 'V For Vendetta' that doesn't limit itself to release date and tech spec should be an infractionable offense. The film is completely about politics! So, I half expect to see an infraction notification in my e-mail in the morning for having brought up the main theme of the film.

I don't know how Canadians are feeling, but here in the U.S....

Well, the last 7.4 years have never been closer to destruction of it's own constitution by its own government. There is real personal relevance as far as V is concerned.

Check out this tid bit on V. There is a quick shot during one of the riots/protests where you can see half of a protest sign which reads "F*ck Bu.."

Interesting comment from the movie makers as this is supposed to take place in England.

Well, I think most Canadians are oblivious to the trouble that we are in. With the hidden agenda by certain establishments to abolish the borders between Canada, the U.S., and Mexico, the populace of "igloo dwellers" (as we are so often called) need to develop a better understanding of the world around them. I do my part to try and educate. But, alas... the masses are asses!

But, enough of this talk. I now fear that I might be treading the waters of what may be considered "rule breaking behaviour". The fear of Big Brother has silenced me.
