Default Another 5/5: Pearl Harbor

Chad's Pearl Harbor review

Quote:
Like most I was sold on the benefits, if not the need for the new advanced codecs like AVC and VC1 for high definition. And while both have produced great results, it's releases like this that make me hope the lesser compressed codec, MPEG 2 hangs around a bit longer. I'm no longer sold that heavier compression from VC1 and AVC is the ideal. But that's still too early to qualify. Regardless, I saw no problems with compression, no artificial video noise, no posterization/banding of color transitions or fades. Pearl Harbor looks like 35mm film is supposed to and never hints at being processed.
The ability to move carefully to new codecs, while maintaining high release rates AND excellent quality, was always what I have pressed.

We all know that VC-1 and AVC must be potentially better. The specs are better (oh, the irony!). They have to realize that potential. And BD gives you the bandwidth flexibility to move to high quality VC-1/AVC while still maintaining work-flow productivity, since extra bandwidth can be used to hide the problems, rather than expensive compressionist tuning.

nice. I wasn't a big fan of the movie when I watched it all those years ago, but good news for the much-criticized MPEG-2 (although most of the criticism is from HD fanboys who still like to mention The Fifth Element)

I watched this the other day and was blown away by the quality of this disc. The attack scene in LPCM is most definately reference demo material.

Yeah, well apparently we have a wormhole connection to June 2006 where all the HD DVD fanboys live.

And when Sony brings out a spectacular BD50 of T5E, they'll go all epileptic screaming how Sony is double dipping.

Pure hatred. If it were toward an ethnic group they would have been banned long ago. (Remember DM? He has stunning anti-black and anti-semetic posts out there on the web)

Apparently, they want 7/8ths of a format (and 75% of all catalogs) as their maximum.

For the record I think he has some serious issues with his setup.
that is total BS, I sit 1.4X back from a 34.5" x 83" 2.40:1 image, which is blown up even more, nothing like that ever, PH is a grainy film and this guys setup has issues with it and most likely everything else

Did he give the timecodes?

"Here's proof. No I won't tell you when, you go find it".

Go find what may not be there on your system? Good trick.

I'm sure that you can find issues with any encoding. It would be interesting if people did some side by sides on Paramount titles to see if differences can be detected.

It's unreleased score (I believe that specific cue is by Steve Jablonsky or Geoff Zanelli).
