Question can i connect these speakers to my new receiver and get hd audio?

when i bought my samsung tv it came with a dvd player and 5.1 speaker setup...but i think the speakers may only work with the dvd player. they connect with audio wire to the back of the dvd player and i can use them..would i be able to connect these audio wires to a receiver and get hd audio?

what do you mean buy audio wire?....is it standard speaker wire?...if so then yes, you can hook to any receiver...hd audio can be used if your receiver can support it

its the kind where you snip off the end with a cable cutter and stick into speaker and it closes on it

if that made any sense

What you need to do is find out the ohm rating of both your receiver and speakers before a clear cut answer to your question is available. A 4 ohm speaker on a 6 ohm or 8 ohm receiver will cause slow damage to your receiver over time.

HD AUDIO: You can get HD audio out of any speaker connected to a receiver, so long as the receiver has the ability to handle the HD audio streams.

What receiver are you using? Most receivers are made to run @ 8 ohms. Do you have a model number for the receiver/speaker set you got?

i dont have the receiver yet, it will either be the 605 or yammy v663 (i believe both have 8 ohm impedence)

my current (crappy) speakers are 3 ohms

would it be bad to hook these up to the receiver?

also: i dont see anywhere on the receiver where you can attach the speaker wire...it looks like you can only "plug in" stuff?

i can read where it says "center" "front left" etc, but those dont look like they connect with speaker wire lol

Yes you can connect the speaker wires on to that receiver....there are those in the center that are red on top and black in the bottom....that is for speaker wires...(negative/positive)....you simply put the wire in the right color and turn it so it grabs it....damn that sounds lame and i don't know if you understood it...

ok now that i looked again, they aren't in the center, they are towards the bottom left...if you count them they are nine reds and nine blacks...

ya, i see them thanks

i didnt know you had to turn it so it grabs on to the wire...the one i have no you press on some clip and it holds it...thats why i was confused

but would it be okay to use a 3ohm speaker on an 8 ohm receiver?

Technically you can and they will work, sound will come out of them, i'm not an expert in this field, but i would take the advice of the other users here and just make sure that in the near future change them so they are the same ohms....

i dont think anyone saw this, but i already highlighted it for the world to see..

it WILL work, but i ADVISE you NOT to.

3 ohms speakers will definitely hurt your brand new receiver. its going to push your speaker to go either - 1. overheat and spunk out or 2. it WILL work but degrade quicker than a 5 dollar hooker.

do yourself a favor and find some good speakers that are rated at 6 to 8 ohms.

consider this. you invested a lot of money into your new receiver right?

maybe its a good idea to invest a little more into some speakers to match em.

itchin to get great speakers at a cheap price? wait it out bud, save a little more and buy a GREAT set of speakers.

if you really want to, get these Insignias from best buy.

they're a favorite when it comes to DIY projects, but im sure you wont be interested in that...

70 clams plus tax for a pair. These are NOT magnetically shielded, so if your using an old tube tv, not good. but for the lcd/plasma/pj people, they work.

Yeah, don't do that. The amp is designed to run with a resistance of 8 ohms . . . 3 ohms is obviously half of that. No bueno. If your receiver doesn't fry itself, it certainly won't work for very long.

For speakers? Your only option is going to be speaker wire. You can either use bare wire of you can get banana plugs. Banana plugs get you a better connection, typically prevent oxidation of the wire, and are a HELL of a lot easier to connect to the receiver. Even if they didn't have other advantages I'd recommend them for convenience alone. You can get some from monoprice for pretty cheap.

Multichannel ins are only for a source that has analog multichannel outs (like some Blu-ray players). All those are is basically an analog HDMI input, without the video.

You are correct, the PS3 is analog-less. But, going back to one of your other questions, see on the red and black plugs (they're called binding posts) there's the silver hole in the middle? You shove the banana plugs in there and you're done, as opposed to unscrewing each binding post, making sure you don't get any stray wires when inserting the wire into the post, and clamping each one down. I don't know about you, but my fingers are a bit too big to comfortably screw around with that.
