Default theater in a box speakers question

question:

i have a home theatre in a box. i'm thinking of buying a receiver in the near future. would it be okay for me to use the speakers that come with the hometheater in a box temporarily until i am able to afford genuine HT speakers? or would it hurt the speakers since the ohm's would be so high?

as long as the receiver you buy can handle the impedance of your speakers you'll be fine. Always check first, but 6 ohms isn't out of the realm of possibility on some entry level receivers. What is the impedance rating of your speakers?

the impedence says 4 ohms for the FR FL RR RL and the center speaker says 2 ohms

i'm thinking of buying the onkyo 605

You'd end up frying the 605 with those impedence ratings... It can only handle down to 6 ohm loads. sorry.

dang, so there's really no point in buying the receiver unless i have some good speakers then.

so what you're saying is that if ohms are too low, then the power that the receiver is trying to send has no where to go an will harm the electronics inside the receiver due to over heating?

the higher the ohms then the better? is this is dependent of the gauge of the wire? or just what the speakers themselves will handle?

exactly.

They aren't necessarily better. High end amplifiers have no problem with 4 ohm loads. They key is to make sure the receiver and speakers can be mated together. Most can, but HTiB's are usually designed to work together and can't always be parted out easily. That's changing some recently though.

Back to the topic though...
The impedance is for the speakers alone. Wire gauge is important when high wattage or long runs are being used. you want to make sure the wire is capable of carrying the output wattage to the speakers.

Right..so...let's reverse your situation here and get you a new setup.

You can...keep the receiver you have and upgrade your speakers and THEN buy a new receiver.

OR...this setup can be the bedroom or den set up and you can start fresh with a receiver and a decent set of fronts for a while and then add on bit by bit.

It's not lost. Do a little research and I think you can find some answers.

Have fun with it.

later,

Here's a couple links if you'd like to learn more on impedance.

and another with mathematics and great analogy of it all

another thing to consider is that a home theater takes time to build.

its not 'just about the recievers' or even the speakers themselves.

a long arse amount of research first about your room dimensions, time chart as of how long this room will stand, WAF, etc should all be put into consideration.

on a closing note,
- speakers that are within 6-8 ohms are the general preference to work with a good reciever.
- front speakers, reciever, source - this is the matter of importance i place in having a great sound stage.
- short on cash? JG wentworth. or better yet, save. consider your HT as an investment (as i always say) because it benefits you in the long run. no point in buying 99 clam speakers then trading them in a year or so to upgrade.
- have fun. forums are a great place to learn about HT material, and learn a lot about certain facts and myths about things that run on wires. you just have to be selective and always find other resources to back up what you mention/find.
