Denon AVR-588 - Blu-ray Forum

Hi, second post...first one you guys recommended upgrading the receiver, so I did! The new one is complicated as heck, and the HDMI inputs are only good for video, not audio, which just makes things more complicated.
I'm not sure if connecting an optical cable (which I have to buy tomorrow) to the 588 will produce PCM audio (from my trusty blu-ray player, my ps3), which is my only real concern.
I've still got all the packaging, and I'll gladly return it if it doesn't do what it should.
As it stands, the passthrough hdmi ports are useless, and a let down, as I was rather excited!
So I will connect the TV to the Ps3 via HDMI (for video), and connect the Ps3 to the receiver (for audio) via optic cable.
This should give me the best possible sound??

Lossless sound won't be available over optical.

Sounds like that's what you were going for.

If so,.. try to return it.

Make sure whatever AVR you buy doesn't mention HDMI Switching. And says something about HDMI audio instead.

So,

Did you return it? ....

I just ordered the 788 which should fit your needs. (It's a good match for the PS3 because it accepts PCM via HDMI.)

Yip...Future Shop took it back without a fuss, and I got the 788. Much better system, though I'm having trouble with the rear speakers...something about 'zone 2'.....

Hey,

Glad to hear it... I just got a 788 this week too.

I had a problem with the video from HDMI (which was no fault of the Denon but rather something to troubleshoot downstream) so I'm still getting off the ground with this AVR.

Can't wait to dig more into the settings. I love some of the stuff I read in the manual for example you can cap the volume at -10db or 0. I will likely set that up for 0 because I'll calibrate that to reference level which is louder then I'll ever be listening to it.
