Default Is this considered upgrading?

I have a pair of Technics SB-4500A's and the right front speaker is starting to crap up. I was watching this pair of speakers on Ebay and was wondering if I eventually upgraded, would they be an upgrade to my 4500's? The 4500 speakers I have are the Linear Phase Speakers from Techincs which I know makes a big difference in SQ. The newer Technics look better but I'm just not sure. The Technics I have also have a 2" tweeter and 10" woofer.

To be totally honest, I'd avoid anything made by Technics, so if you want to uprade, look elsewhere. Sorry...

Well...according to this kat right here http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/arc...p/t-37704.html

Anything would be an upgrade.

I went to your link and all I can say is Geee Zizzzzzz. Those are some huge speakers.

You might have a little bit more longevity with a speaker company that is known for making JUST speakers, but if you have a good history with Technics then do your thing. But honestly, just don't buy from the guy who is selling THOSE. Take a look at his auction. He doesn't communicate properly and he only has a feedback of 28 and half of that is from buying.

For about a hundred dollars more, you can probably find yourseld a decent (liquid filled) bookshelf set that will LAY WAAAASTE to those tower of power things.

later,

Be careful,

Enjoy.

except their 1200 turntables.... they have been the best and most used turntables in the dj industry since their introduction... and since technics is owned and made by panasonic, their quality can't be that bad... unless you really like their sound, as far as speakers go i would not get technics speakers at all.

I read that article. That is BS about the speakers sounding flat. I love my Technics but I was just wondering if the speakers that guy was selling were any good. It's not like I was going to buy from him though. I saw he only sold 28 items. There was another guy that lives near me that had about a 99.98% positive feedback who sold those same speakers for about half the money. They were only on sale for a few days though.

Bookshelf speakers are better than floorstanding loudspeakers?

I must be missing something here. My cousin has floorstanding speakers and they are amazing, in my opinion.

What is wrong with them? It seems like people seem to dislike them. I just don't know if their speakers after the 70's are any good. That's basically all I'm asking. Please explain technically their defects, if any.

The dual 10" woofers are selling me. Plus, it is a 3 way tower speaker! Seems alright for me!

If they sound good to you then don't worry about what others think. But in the whole grand scheme of things, Technics are not known for their speakers at all. Instead of taking our opinions for it, do yourself a favour and go your local audio/video store and tell them your budget and ask to listen to speakers in that range. If they are reputable, they will recommend you some good speakers and then you can compare those to the Technics. If you still don't hear much of a difference, then make yourself happy and get the Technics. If this is too much of a hastle for you, then just grab the Technics and enjoy.

I think they'd just point and laugh at me if I told them my budget. Not too many people have Technics but I know that, at least in the 70's, they made HI-FI speakers such as the SB-7000A. I didn't even know they made speakers in the 90's like that. If I find a good deal on those speakers, I'll go ahead and get them. If I don't like them, I could always sell them for a marginal profit.

You really don't want those speakers....really. Go for a CE that specializes in making speakers. Do some careful listening and then choose.

Try those Technics speakers against B&W 805 book shelves...I'll even come down to the Paradigm Atoms - no contest. The B&W's or the Atoms win hands down.

Knock on them - I mean really! The box is not solid - so as the music is playing, its adding noise. The entire consturction is bad. In the 70's maybe, but now - no way. (They still hold the Turntable title though )

Sound is too subjective to make a blanket statement (but I wouldn't trade my 705s for those technics!)

**Edit*** Just looked up the listing.... those are pretty big speakers.... but yeah, bigger isn't always better.

I couldn't find much detailed info on what you have, or what you're looking at, but here are reviews (albeit just user reviews, so don't take them as gospel)

Yeah, you're right - many people prefer a non ISF-calibrated picture to a calibrated one (even though the calibrated one is right - people tend to say its not colorful enough or bright enough). Many people have been conditioned to like improper sound.

I've heard that some people will take the newer, crappier made, Technics speakers and fill their boxes or even completely trash the speaker boxes and make new boxes. This is supposed to make them sound so much better. What other speakers, used, old or new would be very worthwhile to invest in, for cheap?

Agreed, their turntables are respected in the DJ industry (anlong with Stanton cartridges). But they have next to zero respect in the audio industry, where sound quality is of more import than the ability to "scratch".
