Default backing up ps3 hard drive

i know theres an option to do this on the xmb but how does it work.

my hd has over 45gb used and some installs are over 6gb which is to big for a fat 32 exsternal hard drive so how do i back it up?

or am i being stupid and the 4gb rule only applys to movies on fat 32?

I used a 160 gig external USB drive to back mine up.

Link to the one I got: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1202648989640

Edit: Oh, the 4 gig limit isn't relevant to the drive size, backups, etc.

I would stick with sumptin with these specs (2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/S)... and 500gb should still work though...

FAT-32 supports that size (500 gig) but I'm not sure if the PS3 adds any other limits or not. I think, at one point, Sony was recommending 320 gig or less. Not sure why though.

FAT3D doesn't support files larger than two GB, but I don't think the installs are one big file.

Also, when you use the backup utility, it will back up everything. After you put the new drive in, it'll get formatted and then you can restore the backup you made (using the same backup utility). It restores settings, game saves, etc. Basically, I didn't have to do a thing after the restore. The PS3 was exactly like it was before I upgraded the hard drive except it had a lot more space (I ended up using a 250 gig drive). My 60 gig drive was almost full when I did my backup and it took a while to backup and restore so be prepared to wait a while if you have a lot to backup and restore.

2 gig is a FAT-16 limitation. 4 gig is the max file size for FAT-32.

Here's a nice table that compares them all.

My point still stands.

EDIT: Plus that's some sort of NTFS propaganda site.

Heh, I can't tell if you're just joking around or not.

Wiki actually lists it as 4-gig for FAT-16 and FAT-32 with the 2-gig limit for FAT-16 coming about b/c of the max volume size being 2-gig for FAT-16.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FAT-32

This one compares a lot more file systems: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_systems

Holy CR@P, there may be a need for FAT33 or NTFS6 or higher soon because they've already reached half of their 2 TB volume limit.

Everyone has successfully done a backup and restore no matter what the drive. So the facts on how it works are completely irrelevant unless your a geek.

If you plug the drive in and the PS3 recognizes it, you can use it.

It's possible to do larger drives as FAT32, you just need to use SwissKnife to format it since Windows will only format drives this large as NTFS. Or, you can do it within Linux no problem.

Luckily, a lot of external drives are pre-formatted FAT32, no matter the size. My 1TB drive was preformatted as FAT32.
