Default 720p,hdmi help?

hi im new to blu-ray and was wondering if sumbody could help me with sum questions.

i have a 32 inch 720p tv, and a bdp-s300 bd player. i was looking up sum other questions here and got sum answers, but heres my first question.
- if i have my bd player set to 1080i does it make a difference or should i put it on 720p, does it make a difference if i do? i have a hdmi cable also, does that make a difference?( can i only get 1080 p if i buy a 1080p tv?)
-i have my sound settings set to dts and auto should i put it on pcm?

i would really appreciate the help! thanks

well, 1080i and 720p are almost basically the same.. personally 720p looks better for me. it depends on the tv. some tv's cant support 1080i. and yea, 1080p is only for 1080p hdtv..

720p and 1080i are not basically the same. If you set your player to 1080i, your tv will simply down convert it to its native setting of 720p. You should experiment to determine which setting works, i.e., looks, best.

If your TV is strictly 720p TV, you cannot set the player to 1080i. It is not going to work. In some cases, TV display could be 720p but it may accept 1080i, so that it would convert received 1080i to 720p for display. Test this.

My feeling is you may get better results if you set your player to output 720p, that is the native resolution of your display. If your TV scaler is better than the scaler in your player, there is some possibility that you may get a better result if you set the player to 1080i (for 1080p movies). You should test this. If the content is 720p, the best is to set to 720p.
