Smile Onkyo 805 Pre Arrival Checklist?!?

Ordered my 805, should arrive Monday.

To all of you current owners, is there anything I could/should be doing before it arrives to make installation/hookup as simple/fast as possible. I cant wait to hear the HD Lossless Audio!

There isnt any strange/weird wires needed or anything with it right? If I already have a receiver hooked up currently I think the only additional wire I will need is an HDMI cable to run to the TV from the cabinet. All other wires I should need are already there, I think? Aside from the 2 additional speaker wires I will need for the 7.1 mid surrounds.

Oh, and make sure I have enough food/drink so I dont have to leave the house!

Or is there any other things I should be thinking/worrying about?

Thanks guys!

Great Thread, I am waiting for my stimulus check next week then I will be ordering my 805. I am planning on picking up a couple of HDMI's at Fry's this week so I can dump the component video cables and clean up my wire runs a tad.

Another good question is do the units shipped out now need the firmware updates to prevent them from popping?

they're praised as "easy to set up" so I wouldn't worry about anything.

I think that where you bought yours from will play a big part in what firmware you get. Like how fast the retailer you bought them from moves units, if their pricing is good, or high, or all things that would point to how long they have had them in their warehouse. I suppose how many they carry at a given time would have a factor as well.

Im hoping mine has the latest as I order from 6ave and their price is the best right now. Also, when I ordered, it showed as out of stock, but they showed it shipped the next day. So they received them from Onkyo, like Tuesday. Im thinking that mine is the latest firmware because it just arrived. I hope!

That make sense?

It's hard to say. There have been reports here and at AVS of people receiving them with the updated DSP FW. Others have received them and required the updates.

I agree that it is just a matter of when it left the factory, and thus how long it has been in distributors' and/or retailers' warehouses.

Couple things of note from my experience...

1) have a SOLID surface. this thing is HEAVY. make sure you can deadlift 60+ pounds :P

2) Very open ventilation. it gets hot and stays that way. make sure it has room to breathe...i suggest an audio component rack.

3) expect to spend a while setting it up. it's a basic plug and play, but it'll take some tweaking to get it setup the way you like. i highly recommend the Audissey setup.

4) and just for simple installation, you may look into a set of banana plugs for the speaker connectors on the back of the receiver.

overall, this is an incredibly impressive piece of equipment. you will definitely love the sound quality and if you have the speakers to really appreciate it, that just adds to the happiness. cheers!
