Start with the Cinema release, miss out the extended cut (
[Show spoiler] ). Then move on to the Directors cut. It s much improved [Show spoiler] .The work print edition is also quite fascinating, if a bit rough in places. |

Well I started with the Final Cut which ended up being the best version. The original version was akward with Harrisn Ford's narration. The directors cut was similar to the final cut but the AQ and PQ weren't as good for some reason. I guess Ridley Scott re-mastered it again for Blu. Overall I'd say the movie was good, but I am puzzled as to why this movie is so popular. It certainly isn't my favorite Sci-fi movie and probably not even in my top 5. I like it enough to keep it though.

It is all subjective. I saw the original when it played on the big screen in 1982. Have bought every release of it since (with the exception of the Criterion Laser Disc). Am thrilled with the latest BD release, but have a special affinity for the narrated Theatrical cut.

I, too, would start with the final cut, then later if you have time, watch the original theatrical version to see how much Scott's vision differs from what the studio wanted originally released.

See... it's all a matter of preference. I first bought the VCR version, so I like having the Harrison Ford Narrative. Yes, now that you listen to it, you know Harrison has nothing for contempt for it, but I like it... it helped me to understand what was going on.

My opinion: go with the Final Cut version on Disc #1 first. I think it's the best cut of the movie.
The violence isn't edited down in the Final Cut version (like it is in the theatrical cut). The MPAA originally made Ridley Scott trim a couple scenes. I think the narration in the original theatrical cut is really stupid sounding because it's poorly written; the movie is far better served without it. Others may feel different about the narration. I don't think movies have to explain every trivial little thing or spoon-feed exposition to viewers out of fear the viewers won't get the movie. Some things are more interesting if they are left unexplained (like "the force" in Star Wars). Bad science fiction tries to explain everything and thus makes it very boring and very stupid sounding -like how "the force" was described in those Star Wars prequels. The Final Cut version is, by very far, the best looking version of the 5 different cuts included in the 5-disc BD. Last edited by Bobby Henderson; 05-19-2008 at 05:59 AM. |

The Final Cut is by far the best version of the film. But since you haven't seen it before you may want to go with the original Theatrical Cut first. The poorly written narration was thrown into the film at the last minute, at the studios insistence, because they didn't think people would be smart enough to fallow along w/o cliff notes.
