Default be wary of buying receivers on Amazon - got my Onkyo 805 in a broccoli box

Well, sort of. I bought an Onkyo 805 from Amazon (NOT from a 3rd party selling on Amazon), and it was delivered to be outside of its original box (no styrofoam either, but it had its original protective wrapping I believe). It came in a plain large box that wasn't the best shape for a receiver, and there was insufficient packing material (two big pieces of wadded up brown paper, there was plenty of empty space left inside). It was delivered by UPS so I'm surprised there wasn't any external damage. Haven't hooked it up yet so I don't know if it's 100% functional or not, but if it isn't I'll certainly raise hell with Amazon.

I did let them know about my displeasure, and asked for them to either send a new unit with the original box or give me a 10% refund. They gave me the refund without any fuss (should've asked for more, ah well).

I've ordered smaller electronic items from Amazon, as well as large electronics from Amazon Jp, and this is the first time anything like this has happened to me (I did get the Bridge to Terabithia Blu-ray from them with a Sears price sticker on it). The unit didn't appear to be used, but I really hope it wasn't a stolen or floor display model or something like that...

I don't blame you if you don't beleive me, but I really don't have any reason to make this up. I'm pretty satisfied with Amazon otherwise.

Oh in case anyone is wondering about my Location, I do live in Japan -- Amazon doesn't ship electronics overseas but I ordered the 805 while I was back in the US on vacation.

So, the shipment arrived at the location where you were visiting in the U.S.?

That's nothing. The Pirates 2 in my BD10A box had a best buy sticker on it

It's simply units that were returned that were sent back out again

you've ordered "other small electronics" from Amazon while you were in the U.S. also? Do you visit the U.S. often I guess?? Why not buy from retail? A little more, but a LOT less than Japan for you.

I don't have my own car while I'm in the US. Amazon seemed to one of the best prices when the free shipping was factored in (I probably could have found a better deal if I hunted around more or waited for the 806 to come out but I didn't feel like it and wanted it to arrive before I went back to Japan). But I would have gone with some other place if I had known this was going to happen.

I'm not too keen on Onkyo Receivers, but I will only cook with Onkyo Broccoli.

True story.

I received my Onkyo 875 a few days ago in the original box. No problems. As a matter of fact, when I ordered it, it clearly stated that it would be shipped in its original packing material.

I ordered my Sony 720 not too long ago, arrived next day shipping in perfect condition. Unfortuneatly, my subwoofer shipped seperatly, it should arrive today, but I wish I had it now!

If you do encounter something like this, Amazon will be quick to rectify the situation.

Their customer service is usually pretty A+

This is why I like Crutchfield. Very professional and never had a problem with anything I bought. They always ship the same day and only takes 2 days max to get it.

They may not be the cheapest place, but sometimes service is more important. Especially on a big purchase such as a receiver.

Crutchfield is nice when they have good prices, I bought a sony 60 inch from them a couple months ago. The only reason I bought it from them is because they had a great price on it. Im not gonna pay almost $200 more on a receiver just so I can have good service, you should get that anyway.

I call this thread fake.

When I try to purchase this receiver from Korea using Amazon US, and enter my address, I get this message:

The OP clearly states that he ordered and recieved while visiting relatives back in the USA. As I frequently visit other countries I do this myself all the time, order it to deliver to my parents house, go on vacation to my parents and pick-up my order, return to overseas. I do not know why you cannot order electronics to be shipped overseas, but it can be a royal pain in the arse.

I have reasons to believe this thread is for real. I've ordered from Amazon before, and their packing is either a hit or miss IMO. To be very honest, although I just recently got GTA IV Special Edition from them, I do not prefer to shop there if I have a choice.
