Tell me about it! I spent the exact same price on a refurb 805 from eCost last week. I'm keeping my fingers crossed tight that it arrives in good condition. The reviews for eCost don't look promising, but a few people from this forum have ordered through eCost without problem.

Would have been nice to get it NEW from Amazon though.

Fingers crossed! I just commented in another thread. I am reading the reviews right now on the 805 and most are thrilled and amazed, but a couple folks say it can run out and one got a dud out of the box. These things happen, but I wonder what usage habits the guy has who says it runs hot. In other words if he is playing PS3 for 14 hours with the volume cranked, that might just about do it.

My next problem is, I had put together a speaker system but for a completely different system. What do you have going?? I basically was looking at the Sony DG910, but this price drop on the 805 is making it tough.

I've read about the Onkyo running hot, but it sounds like it doesn't run any hotter than amps or other electronic equipment that use a lot of power. 3 opr 4 hours a day will probably be my max time with the Onkyo on, if even that.

I bought a refurb 705 from Onkyo, and love it, but had this deal been around at the time I would have jumped all over it. Yeah, some folks have reported the unit running hot, but I don't think I've read any reports from folks with good ventillation who aren't cranking the volume for hours-upon-hours!

Versus the Sony? Go with the 805 without even thinking of looking back. It it is a significantly better AVR.

I'm guessing the 806 is just around the corner so that's why the big price drop. I'm tempted to get one now and bring it back next xmas when I return home- they're still selling for $1200 here in Japan!

The 805 is a great recevier... I've had mine since Nov of last year and haven't had any problems with it at all. You will need to keep it in a well ventlated area because it does make some heat. The only problem that I have and everyone seems to tell me that same thing is that I have to turn the volume up pretty loud to get the full effect. I run my volume around 70 to 75 and I have a friend that has the 605 and he says that if he gets above 35 it is to loud. I have tried to see if I have to set something in the menu, but haven't found anything..oh well. You really can't beat that for the price though...good luck

It's all just room layout and speakers. I have the 605 and run it between 50-60 depending on what source I'm listening to. While yours is still higher and that does seem odd, I wouldn't be overly concerned.

I've had my 805 for a few months now. It's the very heart of my HT system and I mean it pumps out the best audio I could ever imagine without ever running 'hot'. It's has top notch performance and I don't regret paying the higher price I paid for it. We don't know where those dudes/dudettes who say such things are coming from unless they also tell us exactly how they set it up. I mean some people lack common sense and will try placing a receiver like the 805 in a tight cabinet or stack other audio equipment on top of it or set it up without out ever reading the frackin manual first.

I decided to go ahead and get this one. I'd been considering buying a 605 for my bedroom but instead I'll have this for my living room and move my 705 to my bedroom.

I have had my 805 for almost a month, I too have to the volume up around 68 to 72. Either we are going deaf or its just a number? Anyways enjoy it....

I ordered one from Vanns at $599.98 last week. I should be seeing it some time this week. I guess I'll consider the $1.98 difference as a loss ... oh well, beats spending $799 + tax on it. I was really tempted to do that last week just so I could go pick it up at Circuit City and hook it up.

I've read so much about it here that I can't wait to get that sucker rolling.

6th avenue has had this on sale for $599 for quite some time. i picked mine up over a month ago for that same price. they are INCREDIBLE receivers...i wanna marry mine if i can find a legal loophole. as for the heat, they do tend to run hot, but as stated...not really any hotter then any good receiver would run anyway. the thing that has shocked me more then anything is the heft of this thing. my word, have a friend help you with it...it's 60+ pounds and worth every ounce of it

Here's my situation... I ordered one of these Onkyo 805's a week ago from eCost for $598 shipped. It's a refurb with a limited one year warranty. The thing arrived with a problem - the sound only comes out of the center speaker.

My question is this... Do you think I should go ahead an order a NEW Onkyo 805 from Amazon for $598 shipped and sell the refurb one for a slight loss when it gets back from the shop? assuming they will be able to fix it.

I have the money to spend...
What should I do?

Can you return it to ECost and get the one from Amazon? Or is it an 'as is' purchase? I've had the 805 for about 3 weeks and was happy to have amazon refund me some $$ when they dropped the price.
