PS3 Blu-ray drive failures?

I'm just wondering how many people have suffered from a blu-ray drive failure on their PS3.

Here is the story: I was in my local video game store (a certain nationwide chain I'll mention later, maybe) enquiring about the release date for a game. After telling me the date, the clerk asks if I watch Blu-ray movies on my PS3. "Of course," I tell him. He then tells me that I shouldn't do that because Sony puts the cheapest BD drive in the PS3 and they'll only last about 3 months. Further conversation reveals that their Sony Rep. told them this and that Sony would not be replacing these drives. I was pretty much incredulous and, frankly, a bit insulted. I've had my PS3 for 18 months now and no problems.

The question is: am I on 15 months of borrowed time?
