I hope they include the original version, even though George hates it.

Only the effects were altered, right? There weren't any changes to the story? I really hope Lucas gives us the original version. It could be easily done with seamless branching.
And give us the original mono track as well.
I really don't get it. Pretty much every other director can give us the original version of a movie (look at Spielberg and Ridley Scott, for example), but Lucas somehow needs to keep re-touching every movie he's made.

You know what? I have that DVD, and I've never gotten around to watching it.

You've inspired me - I'll put it in the que for this weekend. I need to see how well my new BD player upscales anyway.

Nevermind, I just watched a comparison between the original version and the Director's Cut, and the effects look even more out of place than they did in the Star Wars movies. I've seen it once on DVD, but I don't think I'll revisit it anytime soon. Too bad.

Like everything with him the original no longer is around. You will be forced to love his current vision!

And his vision changes from year to year.......

I love this movie. The ending is one of the best of any film!

It's cinema at its best.

I clearly prefer the director's cut, because it's the exact same story, but visually better, and a lot less grainy.

I wish George would make more movies like that.

I hope he'll make at least one more movie that completely reflects his vision!!!

I for one, am definitely going to get the director's cut on BD!!!! Can't wait for that. Sure it's not a movie you would watch every day, but it's really worth owning in one's collection.
I never got around to buy the DVD anyway.

I hope American Graffiti will be released soon as well!

One of my favorites!

I have the collector's edition, but I would certainly get it on BD, because what's DVD again???

Sure, people love to whine on and on and on and on.

If he released the original version, there'd be a lot of people going:

It's so grainy! It doesn't look like BD at all!

Take it as an opportunity to let go!

If people think a movie is grainy, then they should be better informed. I also love the fact that the ones who just want the original movie are made out to be whiners. Plus, there's a huge difference between reducing grain (restoring or remastering a picture) and adding a lot of unnecessary CG to a movie (destroying a movie).
While the special effects used when making the movie might seem out of date, so will the CG effects look. In fact, they already do. So, the only solution to keep it up to date is to keep changing it. Isn't it better to just leave a picture alone?

I have a question regarding this upscaling/upconverting thing.

Do the Blue-ray players automatically do this by themselves, or do you have to go into their menu and program it to do it?

Thanks

The director's cut is superior. The new effects and set extensions look marvelous making a good movie great.

I now have another question.

Did any of the stunt work get changed in the last act of the film involving the cars and motorcycles?

Only in your opinion.....

We need the original on the disc especially for those of us that appreciate art and not revisionist garbage.

I just want to say I'm glad my opinion doesn't sound like a foaming at the mouth fanboy angry that a director was able to fix issues he had for decades on his first low budget film.

I think most directors have problems with their first movies, but most just let the movie stay for what it is. Lucas somehow hasn't released the theatrical version of any movie he's made on DVD, and my guess is that it will be the same for Blu-ray.

Let's not bring this back, it's been talk to death in many a Star Wars thread. I understand that for some it should not be so but it's his movies and it's his right to release them the way he want's them. If you disagree do not buy them.

Some do, some don't, depends on the player you have and the settings it has.

Personally I have kept my DVD player in my HT set-up (a Pioneer DV-606D, old but still very good and multi-region enabled). Mainly to ensure that all the upscaling is done in one place (on the A/V receiver, using it's Faroudja upscaler) and not having to fettle with settings for different sources.

Who is foaming at the mouth?

Bottom line: If its not ready then do not release the film to the general public.

Hopefully he will include the orignal cut of the film that was released so many years ago.

The Star Wars Trilogy was released in their original form on DVD.
