Default Scooby Doo Review

Its a Warner release and is available on both formats. HD Digest reviewer was of opinion that it sparkles, eye popping, and depth thats truely superb. He gave it 4.5 stars although the movie itself was not his cup of tea. Perhaps if it was just a Blu ray title it would have dropped to 4 stars, or then again maybe Bracke is starting to come around to the Blu side

If you add up his reviews, overall his BD ones are ahead in PQ, and way ahead in AQ. Especially for the last few months.

He is a BD fanboy, and just hasn't clued in yet.

If I can find this for under $20, it might be hard for me to resist picking it up.

This thread needs more discussion, so how does this movie compare to Raja Gosnell's Smurfs movies? Are they better or worse?

Smurfs wasn't written by James Gunn. Automatic point deduction. Winner: Scooby-doo.

Yeah, I thought the Scooby Doo films were quite too silly for their own good and not as good as the cartoon, but those Smurfs movies were absolutely unbearable to watch.

I saw it when I was in Elementary School. Third or Fourth grade, I think. Growing up, I was a big Scooby Doo fan. I loved all the cartoons, from the goofy 60's episodes that were still airing as reruns on Cartoon Network, to the Zombie Island movie that I watched over and over on VHS.

Even then, I still didn't like the live-action movie all that much. Coming out of the theater with my dad (who had been annoyed by the whole thing -- I distinctly remember him grimacing and scoffing with disgust when Scrappy Doo urinated on Daphne), I couldn't help but feel I should have went with my mom and brother to see "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" instead. At such a young age, I somehow consciously realized I had seen a bad movie. Call it my first step developing a sense of taste.

I was around 6-7 when I watched the second one in theatres, and I distinctly remember feeling quite underwhelmed by both movies, the first one because of how they handled Scrappy and because I feel they missed the point of the original series by having the team being at odds with each other and slowly bonding again.

I actually love this movie. I'm not sure exactly why though. The production design was really cool to me. The tiki-voodoo theme park aesthetic is just really super neat, imo. As a kid, I always really liked the Scooby-Doo cartoon but was never a bona-fide fan. Ergo, the movie didn't ruffle my feathers and kept me well entertained as a kid. Upon revisiting it, I realized that I have a LOT of fond memories and nostalgia tied to this movie that... just got buried over the years, I guess. I used to love this movie as a kid too, but probably couldn't tell you precisely why then either.

This movie was just way too childish and immature for its own good, especially compared to the cartoon.

I love this movie. The fart scene is the only thing that makes me cringe. The rest of the movie is just..bizarre....wonderfully bizarre. It's like a movie that's been made both for adults and children that's fighting for either audience to take control.

Considering the source material which was just a rather formulaic cartoon, the movie is like a bizarre spoof that is having an existential crisis. Add in the 90s greatness and the ****ing fantastic setting of spooky island (non-ironically, one of the best pieces of production design I've seen in a movie, not to mention memorable) it's a film that's never left my brain since childhood.

I'm now considering buying the blu-ray, no shame XD
I wish more adaptions would go more out there with the source material, what's the point in just doing what everyone's already seen?

An under-appreciated movie imo

The fact that the movie has an identity crisis is not a good thing though, but I can't blame Gosnell and Gunn too much for it. This film was supposed to be PG-13 with raunchier and inappropriate jokes, but after Josie and the Pussycats flopped, Warner was afraid that this movie would follow suit and so it was edited to be a watered down PG family movie.

Honestly, it still would have done just as badly (reception-wise) even in it's original cut since it was following up on films like this:

It's like Batman And Robin coming on up after The Animated Series. Would just flop big-time.

I love James Gunn as much as the next guy, but I honestly don't think he really gets Scooby-Doo. Or at least doesn't really get it's evolved beyond than just that one popular 60's show.
