Default Something wrong with my sub.

So, I have a NEW JVC 400 watt sub that goes down to 23 dbls.

When I turn the volume on the sub loud enough to even get a rumble out of it, it makes this loud distortion sound that makes the speaker move in and out real fast and sounds like sh*t!

I cant figure out if its a LFE settiing on my 805 or just what the problem is.

Any thoughts or suggestions to help me resolve this? I'm stumped and desperate to resolve this...

Does it do it even when it's not getting a signal? Make sure your cable is secure.

Just when the signal goes postal like it should. The cables are secure. One of the first things I checked, so I'm at an impass on what this is. Its intollerable.

So it's only distorting when there's actually a loud bass part in the soundtrack? What's your low pass set at?

On the sub you mean? I have it set at 80 dbls and below and the other setting has a knob with a "180" and a "0".

The phase usually comes set at 0. Leave that where it is. 85 is a pretty common setting for the low pass . . . So does it only distort when it's actually getting a loud LFE signal, or does it just go crazy regardless of what's playing? Where's your sub cable plugged into?

I'll make sure its set to zero. I don't think it is just at the moment. It distorts only when the volume goes up on the movie. The sub is plugged into it's designated "out" on the receiver.

Right, but where's it plugged into on the sub? There should be two options, one red, one white (LFE). It goes in the white (LFE) plug. The phase shouldn't have anything to do with it distorting like that.

The cable has two plugs going into the sub... One red and one white.

Is there a separate splitter, or did it come as a one-piece Y cable?

It came with the Y cable. An attachment "splitter" a few inches long connected to the end of the cable to hit both red and white.

Should I try it with only one IN? i.e. the white only?

I forgot to mention. The attachment splitter is removable for both options of using one or both red and white plug ins.

Try removing the splitter and just plugging the cable into just the LFE jack.

The LFE is the White?

I turn the volume on more than 3/4 of the way, or there is very little sound coming out at all.

I also have the internal receiver control the volume at 10.

Hmm . . . you shouldn't have to turn it up that much. Yes, LFE is white. You have it plugged in, right? To the power outlet? Dumb question, probably.

LOL! Ya. Plugged in. Tell you what. I'll set it to zero. Plug in only to the white LFE RCA plug and double check the connection for stability.

I know what you mean about not having to turn it up that high. Add any other thoughts in addition. Couldn't hurt.

Thank you BStecke for the suggestions.

My only other idea would be to double check where you have it connected to the receiver. It should be in the subwoofer pre-out, which is purple, in the "pre-out" section under the "12 v trigger out zone 2". There's another purple jack in the multi ch. section, but that's the wrong one.

Thank you very much. I'll check for this as well.

I have the 805 too Marcus, I think there is only one subwoofer preout on the back. It sounds like you have the bass set to "+10" in the tone control sections but you may also want to check the level. I think that it is distorting when you get a normal .1 signal becuase the tone controls are so high.

Try this:
Turn the tone controls down to 0 or 1.
Go back into "speaker setup" and select "speaker level" or "level calibration" something like that. This way, you can then turn up the level of the subwoofer instead of adding a +10dB increase with the tone control (centered at 50Hz on the Onkyo *05 series).

If that doesn't fix it for you then I'm not entirely sure what you have going on.
