Default Video and Audio Hookup question...

I am going to be getting a Yamaha HTR-6180 within the next few days, upgrading from my HTR-5660.

Currenlty, I have all video running to my tv, and all digital audio running to my amp.

So, I plan to run all video and all audio through the amp, then to the television.

- Does this mean that the amp must be powered on at all times?
- Also, does this mean that no audio will come out of my tv?

My gf and I have different sleeping schedules, and sometimes full surround sound isn't always ideal.

Any thoughts? Thanks!!

I run the coaxial from the Dish box to the t.v. then separate audio cables to the AVR from the Dish box, and I can get audio with or without the AVR on.... My Dish box doesn't have HDMI or Optical, but I assume it would be the same, and you can just use T.V. Volume

ALSO...

The good thing, If I turn on the AVR to use the surround sound, the T.V. speakers automatically mute, which is nice.

Full surround is always ideal. Get rid of your girlfriend.

Full surround is key, just keep the volume down.
