Default Hookup question

I'll be hooking up my system in a couple days and I've got a question. For the most part, the hookup will be pretty easy.

I've got a Blu-Ray, and an upconverting DVD player that will go to the receiver via HDMI.

Dish Network (non-HD) will go to receiver via S-video(best available), and optical for audio.

Then, HDMI from receiver to TV. I will be turning off the TV speakers so all sound comes from receiver.

OK, that was pretty easy, but here is where I'm a little confused.

I watch my local channels in Hi-DEF via an antenna I have mounted on a 30' tower. The antenna cable goes straight to the TV to the TV tuner.

My question is, what is the best way to get sound to the receiver from the antenna?

I have a Sony KDS-60A3000 and it has one optical "out" connection. My receiver(Yamaha RX-V3800) has 4-optical "in" ports. They are marked DTV, HD,BD, and CD. I will be using the "DTV" port for Dish Network and I know I can't use the ports marked HD or BD since when I select any of those sources on the receiver, the sound will be handled from the HDMI connection. Since I don't have a CD player hooked up, can I just hook the optical "out" from the TV to the optical "in" marked "CD" on the receiver to handle the sound from the TV antenna? So in other words, when we are watching TV from the antenna, I would just select "CD" on the receiver for the sound.

The thing that confuses me, is that the sound from the BLU-RAY player, Dish Network, and the DVD player is still getting to the TV thru the HDMI connection. The TV speakers are turned off, but that sound will still exit the TV thru the optical "out" that I will have hooked to the optical "CD" port on the receiver for the antenna sound?

Am I right in saying that the sound will still get to the TV via the HDMI connection coming from the receiver, or does the receiver somehow "strip-out" the sound portion and only send the video to the TV?

Or do I just have to make sure that whatever source I am watching, I have to make sure that all the other sources are turned off?

Am I making this harder than it really is?

Thanks

to keep sound from reaching the TV through the HDMI receiver, you have to tell the receiver:

PG.98 user manual

HDMI Set - Support Audio = RX-V3800

...and yes, you can connect the Optical cable to the "CD" input for OTA brodcast, you run it from the Optical Out on the TV to the Receiver "CD" optical input. (there may be a setting in the TV for Digital audio output, set it to Bitsream or Dolby (not PCM)...whichever are the choices.)

Crackinhedz, Thank you!! That is just what I needed to know. I had not got that far in the manual yet. Do you have this same receiver?

No, I have a Pioneer Elite.

But usually when I help people out, I find the user manual online and give it a quick read...I save the manuals.

Ive got a good collection of Receiver/TV/BD Player manuals goin!

For the most part, Receivers work in the same way...just use different terminology.

Im a geek.
