Skimming through it, this guy counters his own points, and is wrong on others. He complains about a $400 price point when you can go to walmart and get one for less then $300 as it is.

He then complains about the lack of ethernet ports, then says people don't want them anyway. What is his point? That it's bad not to have the ethernet, or that it's bad to have one?

Then the typical HD downloads nonsense. How would that be better then torrents currently are? Yep, waste of my time reading this guys blog. I think they should start doing IQ and history quizzes on people that want to blog.

An article from a geek, what do you expect? Not even worth the minute it took me to skim through it.

It always amuses me when anyone talks about only being interested in a $100 player.("Currently, most Blu-ray players cost around $400 and up. I can go out today and buy a DVD player for under $100. So why would I want a Blu-ray player?") I have been into home theater for 20 years and I have never been interested in any piece of equipment that was $100, ever. I mean for history's sake the first VHS tape players were $1000 for cryin' out loud! And this was back when $1000 was worth a hell of a lot more than today. People are complaining about $400 blu-ray players? Come on! If it's a $100 piece of equipment, it's either painfully a POS or truly yesterdays technology. For me high end has always been where it's at, home theater is about great equipment, not cheap equipment in my book.
The geekazoid who wrote this article is a true idiot.

And if you were around for the fist VHS players? I paid $600 bucks, and that was in 1981 or 1982's money. At least the equivilent of $1200.00 by todays standard. How cheap ass can some people be? If a $400.00 player is too much for someone, they need to forget about HD home theater completely.

Exactly, I paid $600 for my first DVD player back in 98, now you can get a upscaler for 50-60 bucks. People kill me complaining about a 400 dollar price tag on brand new technology.

Spot on comments 'werewuf'. Going off-topic, I also think that prerecorded HDM (BD/HDDVD) are a bargain these days, compared to LD's--the grandfather of HD...heck, even prerecorded VHS/BETA movies used to cost around $100 (CDN).

People's patience and attention levels are nil anymore. If a piece of tech doesn't doesn't soar into the hundreds of billions within a year, it's considered a failure. On the "cheap-ass" note, this is also a generation that actually COMPLAINS if they have to pay for music or movies on-line. If it's not immediate or free, it's doomed to failure. That's where we are today.

TV: $1200, Receiver: $500, Speakers: $500. Blu-ray at $400 seems to be the cheapest component of my set up as it is. *boggle* Lets skimp on the important part of the entire set up, smaaaaaart.

That's a LOW end home theater that I am comparing the $400 Blu to. It's a couple steps above HTiB, but not by much! Now, if we go to a high end set up, they definately can't complain about a $400 Blu. That's just asinine to be complaining about!

Now I see the complaint if they have this:

HTiB: $99 Walmart special 100 watts.
TV: $299 Walmart 27" SDTV.
DVD: $39 Walmart apex chinese knock off brand.

Then yeah, the Blu player would cost more then the entire set up. But if that is all they have, then why would they even be buying a Blu player??

Hear hear! Very well put 'Heart_Collector'....Yes, while they'll complain about paying for a song, at the same time, they won't think twice about paying for only a few seconds of that song in the form of a ringtone....kids these days....

Yep. I'll only be 30 this November, but I already feel far removed from my brother's kids' generation. (Then again, I've felt removed from my generation on numerous occasions...too much celebratory debauchery and too little forethought). Thus concludes this mini-rant. Thank you for your time.

People amaze me. They truly believe that because the format war is over, we can all sit back and enjoy a steady stream of cheap Blu-ray players, media, and content. What economics class did these people attend?

Sony's victory over HD-DVD left just one format standing─and absolutely no competition. The lack of competition means that prices are likely to remain inordinately high or, even worse, they can go up. Yeah, you heard right. ...
Apparently this guy doesn't understand the competition is that multiple companies make blu-ray players and movies, not just Sony. That alone tells me he is playing a political card and spinning the facts. Not worth reading the rest of the article when the premise is made on a lie. This jerk deserves some hate mail.

I've been saying the same thing, but caught hell for it.... people on this site complaining about the price of gas, shipping, etc.... and I said....

"If you're THAT price sensitive to these things, you probably shouldn't be buying plasma t.v.'s and Blu-rays to begin with"

This is, afterall, not a necessity for life!!!!

That makes me think - I remember that I used to pay upwards to $60.00 for laser disc movies! I think Walmart and DVD have spoiled a lot of people. The price of BD's are actually cheap for a new format compared to other formats when they entered the ring.
