The image of this Blu-ray Disc (BD) in 1080p via HDMI on a 70 "Full HD 1080x1920 display is a widescreen 1.85:1. 'Signs' is on 35mm film shot and produced with a Digital Intermediate process (35mm filmnegatief is scanned into the computer and edited and then to the cinema teruggeschreven to 35mm film).
The image of this BD is pretty sharp, but there are also a number of scenes that the picture what soft calls (probably on purpose). The picture has a good contrast and fine schaduwdetail. The film has a stylized look on the bright scenes with a warm orange hue, while a cool dark blue hue. The colors are bright and full and black is good and solid. Picture a high level in depth and detail, what makes the SFX look good and that the dark scenes to follow. Beeldruis missing a whole, and filmgrain there is only a few scenes in very minimal extent. Digital compression "mistakes are missing entirely, but there are still some moments of solarisatie moments. Edge enhancement is still little, but not entirely lacking.
This is a solid and pleasant transfer, which perfectly with the mood of the film line.
Compare with the DVD:
Although the DVD is neatly looks upscaled to 1080p, 576i, it is actually quite disappointing. There are considerable differences to be fixed. This "new" HD transfer that makes the picture look more natural and fresher by a much better balance / dynamics in the colors. The dominant orange and blue hue in the DVD and the unnaturally bright colors are now in balance and give the herfstkleurschakeringen now well again. The higher resolution makes the picture that much sharper, tighter and more detailed look, not only in the foreground, but also in the background. Especially the special effects take advantage of them, and get a more 3D and more natural appearance. The Aliens are now even more vague such as DVD, but more remarkably with a more solid look. What is vague on the DVD, is now sharp. Versmering of the image in the many scenes with minimal exposure and smoke, etc., will find no more. The picture is simply much more information (definition). The high resolution with the efficient H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Definition video codec that makes the image does not suffer from compressiefoutjes or versmering, but there are still some moments of solarisatie and little edge enhancement. Yet the result that a total of more cinematic impression. This is an HD presentation that the absolute home theater and a new elevated viewing.
