They're not educated on the subject, they're happy with their VHS or DVD, and blu-ray players and discs seem too expensive to them. That'd be my guess.

Cost of both players and media is keeping people away. Plus if they do not have a HDTV, why would they feel they need HD Media? Heck, most of the consumers that have a HDTV probably do not a home theater so they would not care about the advance audio codec's either let alone surround sound. They are in the "good enough" crowd where DVD is good enough for them.

They are cheap for one. They don't "get it" at all. Never did. Never will. They claim that there is no dicernable difference though they have never even really seen the power of blu or HD TV. Complain about the price of the players. Waiting for 4th Quarter sales. Gas prices. I am labeled a cook because I talk about blu ray and hi end electronics. But these same people spend thousands of dollars on season tickets, vacations, and expensive cars. Then go home and watch crap ! Their loss !

People are waiting for them to be around $100-$150 and also blu technology is changing so much they don't want to be left behind with their $300+ purchase.

i would not say people are cheap...and for the most part they know about the technology...the players are expensive and have you seen the state of the economy lately? Some people are not blessed with a bunch of money like you seem to think they are.

My parents have plenty of money and HDTVs but I can't see them ever getting a blu-ray player unless I buy it for them. They just don't watch movies very often and would grow frustrated with the load time and if a disc didn't work because it needed a firmware update. My dad still watches It's a Wonderful Life on VHS every Christmas and when I've offered to buy him the DVD he says the tape is fine.

Oh I know about the economy and I know some are not blessed with money. I myself have not been blessed, but worked hard for years. I just see people spending thousands on trips, season tickets, going to movies, going out to eat a nice resturants, fast food joints, paying to go to fancy gyms and making insane car/SUV payments. It all comes down to the people don't care about what we care about.

The cost is probably the biggest reason (HDTV required, wall-mount or TV stand, set up costs, blu ray player, surround sound system, etc.). Another reason could be complacency b/c a lot of folks probably already have a large DVD collection. Also, the "blu world" is still in its infancy and it could just be confusing to a lot of folks.

We're only just starting to see fully functional (profile 2.0, support for all HD audio codecs) standalone players at reasonable prices.

Movie releases are only just starting to really ramp up; now that Paramount and Universal are onboard, we should shortly start to see all major new movies released on Blu-ray day and date with DVD, which will send a strong positive message to consumers that the format is worth buying into.

Age demographics play a big part. Priorities typically change with age. If you don't acutely understand this already, you will certainly understand it later in life (if you live long enough).

+1

I definately agree with this as the older I get the more I save up to purchase new technology. First it was gaming consoles when I was younger and now I'm more focused on the bigger picture:

Default Why!? Why not! Here's why not --

In due course it won't be up to them. Planned obsolescence baby. It's coming. Just like circa 2002-3. Still like your VHS player? Tough titty, there's no money in it anymore so you better ante up for DVD. By 2005 there's won't be a new VHS release for you to watch, you Luddite VHS chump.

It's happened before.

It _will_ happen again.

This is why it's hard to take seriously some comments lately coming from Kris Deering et al. to the effect that "BD won't be a total failure if it goes niche like Laserdisc". Like hell it won't be! The studios and the CEs are going to ensure DVD goes down so there will be a few years of luscious cash cream from the Blu-ray cash cow.

I'm all for it.

It will increase along with the adoption of HDTV. It's that simple. As more people buy large HDTV sets more and more of them will be looking for HD Content to play on them...
