Default PS3 & Pioneer VSX-918V-K

Hello there,

I am sorry if any of you will find this post also written in a different thread, but I was planning to go and buy my equipment today and I really seek for an answer.

I am new at this site and I am also very new to the Hi-def world.

I am planning to buy a PS3 and the pioneer VSX-918V-K receiver.
Will I be able to listen to the lossless LPCM signal even if the receiver dosen't decode Dolby THD or DTS-HD Master Audio?

The receiver has 2 hdmi A/V imputs, however, I still haven't figured out what hdmi version the pioneer supports.

I am sorry if this question was asked before, but I looked at different posts and I couldn't find a specific answer.

P.S. I have chosen this reciver exclusively for its price tag and for the hdmi imputs; however, any suggestions regarding a similar receiver within the same price range (< 300) are very very welocome (and strongly encouraged .)

Thank you very much for your help.

was looking through the owners manual and all it speaks of is 2 channel PCM.

I would have to say its not worth it.

For the price range you are looking at, these come to mind:

Sony STR-DG810 (5.1 PCM)
Sony STR-DG910 (7.1 PCM)
Sony STR-DG720 (7.1 PCM)

Onkyo TX-SR 605 (7.1 PCM and TrueHD/Dts-MA decoding)

Yamaha RX-V661 (7.1 PCM)
Yamaha RX-V663 (7.1 PCM and TrueHD/Dts-MA decoding)

...each would pair well with the PS3

crackinhed,

Thank you for your reply.

I do have another question now.

Reading the specifications for the sony STR-DG720 I found that this receiver (as well as the other 2 sony's) have a high THD value.

This is what I found on their website:
Channel Power Rating : 7.1 Channel Power Rating: 105W x 7 Amp Power (8 ohms, THD 1.0%)

Knowing this, would you still suggest buying this AVR?

Thank you for your imput.

...the question is...

would you notice 1% THD vs. say .08%?

...maybe? maybe not?

But for the price, it will not be a high end system anyway. You could always try it out and return it if you do not like the way it sounds. (check store return policy first)

Since I was going to buy everything on Amazon or on another reliable online vendor, returns would be more complicated compared to a traditional brick and mortar store.

Don't get me wrong, I would return if I had to, especially if there was something wrong with the unit.

While I was researching, I also found the Yamaha HTR-6160. Do you know of any particual difference between the 6160 and the RX-V663?

I read that the onkyo 605 tends to get very hot and in my particular case the system will not have a lot of space for air flow. This is why I am more leaned towards the yamahas.

they look to be almost identical...whatever difference if any, is not very apparent.

I haven't noticed it get any hotter than equivalent recievers at work... I would see if a local retailer carries it and go see for yourself... receivers always seem to give off a fair amount of heat though... from my experience.
