Question How many Star Gate movies are there?

..and what are their titles?

I have Star Gate on blu-ray as one of my 5 freebies for buying my player. The movie is good enough that I would buy any sequels but I don't recall any.

Please don't tell me about the TV show as I don't really follow it and make it a rule not to buy TV series on any format.

Thanks in advance.

There are no Stargate movie sequels outside of the TV series and its direct-to-video sequels

Stargate was release in 1994
3 years later the movie inspired a television series called Stargate SG-1 which ran for 10 years. Stargate Atlantis which is a spin-off of Stargate SG-1 begin airing in 2004-present.

There are two straight to DVD Stargate SG-1 Movies

The first is called Stargate: The Ark of Truth released in 2008. This movie marks the end of the Ori story arc which began in Season 9.

The 2nd movie is called Stargate: Continuum. It will be release on July 29,2008 on DVD & Blu-ray.

The producers are considering a third movie, but as of May 2008 no plans have been made. Brad Wright (one of the producers) stated this film would center on the character Jack O'Neill.

Stargate Universe is a third series currently in the early stage of development.

Excellent info. So, would I be able to follow any plot line if I were to buy those straight to video movies? I assume they are widescreen.

The DTV sequels are made to be stand alone, but in the case of the first two, a richer understanding of the storyline and characters will be had if you see the TV series first.

I would not recommend watching either of the DTV movies no matter what they say unless you watch the TV show. Ark of Truth is the capper to a 2-season storyline, and Continuum relies on foreknowlege of many characters from the show

The entire show is 16:9

You could always netflix it, or watch the endless reruns on Sci-Fi, but I don't recommend jumping in mid stream

You should be able to follow the overall plot line, I’m not sure how much you’ll enjoy them.

Stargate: The Ark of Truth is the end of Season 9 &10 story arc. There is a special Feature called The Road Taken: Prelude to the Ark of Truth. It is a 9 minute recap of Stargate SG-1’s ninth and tenth seasons. This will give you basic ideas of the Ori Story arc.
However the only character from Stargate is Daniel Jackson (played by a different actor) and a lot has happen in 10 years of history so yes you can watch them, but you may not enjoy them has much if you haven’t seen SG-1 season 1-10

Stargate: Continuum is a stand-alone movie, you should be able to follow the overall plot line on this one too,but it will draw heavily on Stargate SG-1 Season 1-10. I’m not sure how much you’ll like this movie without watching the series. I could give you a better answer after I watch it, but I think you may enjoy it more if you watched the series first.

Ok guys, I'll say this is a "no go" for me. Just saved me at least 50 bucks for some other blu-ray.

Well since you didn't watch the SG-1 Season 1-10
I would say rent Stargate: The Ark of Truth, if you like it then you should like the upcoming Blu-ray release of Stargate: Continuum.

While we are talking SG-1 TV show, I have a question if you don't mind. I have been looking to get into another Sci Fi show, and have been thinking about giving this a chance. But I have read a couple of places that Season 1 isn't the best. I can rarely get into a show if I do not start at the beginning, so jumping ahead is out of the question for me. So if I take the chance and buy Season 1, do you think I will still find enough enjoyment in it to push through until the better seasons.

Had the same issue with Babylon 5 and never did get through the first season.

Here is a alittle info on my Sci Fi TV watching habits, it may help you.

Watched almost all of X-Files - Like It

Watched all of Farscape - Love It

Watched all of Battlestar Galactica (New) - Love it, but my love has waivered a bit in Season 4

Watched quite a bit of Star Trek:TNG - Like It

Have never been able to get into: Babylon 5, other Star Treks that are not TNG.

If you can push through season 1, seasons 2-4 of Babylon 5 make it worth it. Season 5 is skippable IMHO. It's not bad, it's just not necessary after they rushed to finish the series at the end of S4.

Stargate comes highly recommended. Perfect balance of standalone storytelling and ongoing story arcs and threads.

Do not rent Ark of Truth without watching seasons 9 and 10 at the minimum

You should be able to get through the first season I don’t think it was really that bad, they are some good episodes during Season 1. It may not be the strongest season but I think it’s better than some of the seasons of the X-Files during it's run.

As for Babylon 5, I don’t care too much for Season 1 my problem was with Jeffrey Sinclair. Once your pass season 1 though it much better Season 2-4 are great. Season 5 not bad, but it felt the like J. Michael Straczynski didn’t know where to take the story.
