That's a fantastic price for that receiver. It is probably that cheap because their **09 models are due to start showing up in July. It will not decode the newer blu-ray audio formats (Dolby TrueHD & DTS HD MA), but it will decode PCM 5.1 and maybe PCM 7.1. If you were using a PS3 as your blu-ray player and using an HDMI cable, it would not be a big deal because the PS3 can decode the new audio formats internally and sent it out as PCM to your Denon. With your S1, I'm not sure... if it can do True HD and DTS HD MA and your using a HDMI, It'll probably work. As far as speakers go, give me a budget for speakers and possibly a total budget for the whole package and we may be able to give you some better options... We're glad to help.

It looks like your Sony S1 can decode PCM, TrueHD, but not DTS MA... Between these receivers and your player I am leaning a bit towards recommending the 805. If you want my honest opinion, and I think many others on this site would agree with me, I would purchase a receiver that is a little less expensive, therefor giving you a better speaker budget. You can get a receiver that decodes all the latest audio formats and still have plenty of power for about $350. Whether it is the Onkyo 605, Yamaha 663(which I have and love even thought I haven't upgraded my speakers yet) and there are other options as well. Buying an 805 and setting up some mediocre speakers would be a waste of all that power IMO.

Here's a good setup I think you'd be pretty happy with within your stated (I added) budget. You can get the Yamaha 663 for $350 on certain sites and I've heard good things about this speaker set, including in Home Theater Magazine for about $500 including subwoofer.

Wow, those polks are cheap as all get out, but wouldn't the 805 be a little bit of overkill for those speakers. The Yammy 663 is cheaper and seems to be more in line with a HTIB setup. |

You need to be spending more than that on EACH SPEAKER in order to take full advantage of a reciever like that. You won't hear any difference between the 605 and the 805 with a $300 set of speakers.

Well, sure, but if he ever decides to upgrade his speakers, he probably will. Plus you get more features that help you get the most out of your setup. I don't think it makes sense to buy a lesser quality receiver just because the speakers aren't audiophile quality.

EDIT: that may be an exaggeration.... but you get the gist of it..... to "get the most" from his audio... the speakers are the part of the equation that has the largest affect on the sound that reaches your ears. You can get my receiver for $500 now, and I'd consider it "adequate" for pushing my speakers..... and my speakers are pretty nice in my opinion. The speakers are the great equalizer in my opinion. i see what you mean but i hear alot of good things about the 805 and i thought it was a good deal so i went for it. i'll upgrade my speakers in a decent amount of time (before my receiver is worthless).i also have 30 days to take the polks back if i dont like them. may be i'll take them back and re-buy them every 30 days untill im ready to upgrade lol!!
