Default Need advice for a new reciever

Hello, I have an old sound system, about 10 years old, and I was thinking about getting a new receiver that was HD ready and all so I can use it with my blu ray player, my speakers are fine for now, but I'll probably replace them in a year or so. Anyways my budget for this receiver is about $200-$400, I only need 5.1 and I want a good amount of watts, and of course I want it to support uncompressed HD sound, what are my options. Thank you.

Look for Onkyo 606, Yamaha 663, Pioneer (not sure the model on that). Those all will decode HD sound and probably pack enough power for you for now. When you upgrade your speakers, depending on when that is, you can add an external amplifier to get more juice if you'd like. For that, you'll need a receiver that has pre-outs and the 606 does not have them, you'd have to step up to the 706 to get them. The Yamaha does have them as well as being "dot 2" meaning it has two sub inputs rather than one, which is standard.

Onkyo TX-SR606
Yamaha RX-V663
Pioneer VSX1018
Denon AVR-1909
Sony STR-DG820/920

These are probably the best entry level receivers you will find. You may find some under or around $400. Like the Sony 820. Look around on the net for the best prices.

I agree with everything but the Sony. While it has the same features/capabilities of the others, I really just don't feel like it is in the same league in terms of build quality.

I'm not a sony hater at all, I just don't think AVR's is something they are particularly good at.

While everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion, you provide no support for your view. Which makes it nothing more than personal opinion, probably not even based from personal experience?

Highly recommend the Yamaha RX-V663! It's my first receiver. I posted my review in the V663 thread. It's beautiful, bella.

What's wrong with personal opinion?

It's not like I didn't buy a brand new receiver just a year ago...
You think I just picked one at random?

I did lots of research, which included multiple store visits. Because of that experience, it is my personal opinion that Sony receivers in that price range don't measure up in build quality to the other ones you mentioned.

My reasons?
The cases don't feel as sturdy. The controls aren't as solid. Displays on the front of the unit weren't as clear and didn't show as much information. Remotes were junk.

Like I said, I'm not a Sony hater, but I just don't think AVR's are their best product. Their TV's and media players are great.

Except that it doesn't support decoding of the HD sound formats. Marantz SR5003 is the base model for that and it's a bit out of the budget.

true, I didn't read the part where OP said HD ready. Could still be a great receiver if his Blu-ray player does the decoding.
