Default Stand alone Blu recorder recommendations

Need a recommendation or two on choosing a good Blu-ray stand alone recorder, if any. Did a little research but the info isn't complete or outdated. A good deck that isn't ready for prime time might not be available yet but that's why I'm asking you guys. Help me out.

In America, they aren't available yet. In Japan, there's several really good models. In the U.S., though, there's still a number of issues to be worked out (CableCard vs. OpenCable, etc) before anyone is going to seriously look at offering a Blu-ray recorder in this market.

Thanks. That was the impression I was getting from my research. I hate it when I finally get to spend money and nobody wants it.

Don't know what you been looking at, but a lot of members are beginning to drool over the new Sonys and Panasonics coming out.

I've always been a Panasonic fan, but for now, Sony has my blu little heart.

Are you referring to the Panasonic and Sony recorders available in Asia, or the upcoming players available in the U.S.? The OP was asking about recorders.

I don't think its that nobody wants it, but the U.S. needs to get Open Cable going ASAP. Right now, there would be a ton of trade-offs in trying to make a US recorder. You could make a ATSC (over the air)/Clear QAM model, but a lot of what people would want to record wouldn't be available (over cable) as Clear QAM. The other option would be to release a cable-card model, but then customers would have to "rent" the cable cards from the cable company, and they have a lot of issues of their own. I think once Open Cable is finalized and ready to go, you'll see a Blu-ray PVR pretty quickly.
