Default Yamaha htr-6080/rx-v861 volume question...

Hello all, I have (finally) just hooked up my brand new htr-6080 I just unhooked my htr-5660, which has served me very well for many years.

I did the auto setup, then tweaked a couple of settings. However, I find the that equivalent volume between the two receivers are much different.

For example, I used to watch dvd/bd with 5.1 audio at approximately -35 to -40dB, and leave the radio on for my dog when I'm at work at -60dB, which was quite loud.

I now notice on the htr-6080, that I have to crank it about 30dB higher than the htr-5660. Is this right? Did I do something wrong?

If anybody could shed any light it would really be greatly appreciated!

THANKS!!!

I would say that normally -35 / -40 dB should be pretty low.

I would guess that the speaker levels that you were using with your HTR-5660 were probably higher than what your using right now.

If you want to set the levels of your speakers properly follow the instruction in the "Calibration your audio with a SPL meter" thread. If you use these instructions your reference level at 0 dB whould be 80 dB (the volume display on the Yamaha is a relative display).

What is important is that all your speakers are at the same level.

By the way, how do you like the HTR-6080? I am still trying to figure out if I should keep the Denon AVR-988 or return it and get the Yamaha HTR-6080 or RX-V863 instead. One thing that is making me reconsider is the scaler on the Denon (Faroudja FLi2310) vs the one in the Yamaha (Anchor Bay Technologies ABT1010).

Hi Johk, thanks for the response.

So far I really like the htr-6080. I had a chance to crank up some uncompressed audio from the ps3 and it sounded great. Still needs some tweaks.

As far as upconverters, I couldn't tell you much about those. As far as sound the Yamaha is really great!
