Spiderwick missing the protective coating? - Blu-ray Forum

anyone that owns spiderwick noticed the protective coating not on there or is paramount using a different type?

There are plenty of DVDs that doesn't have it's protective coating.

30 Days of Night
Cloverfield
The Signal
etc..

Yes, a scratch resistant protective coating to protect the disc.

I was under the assumption that it was mandatory for a BD to have the coating. I never really look at the disc to tell the difference. And I try to take very good care of them, so I dont really care about it. But it is nice to have the protection there just in case something does happen.

Same for me, I remember reading that they developed the coating so the disc no longer needed to be encased in a cartridge.

I don't know what makes you think the coating isn't there. It looks exactly like every other Blu-Ray disc I have.

I remember seeing a chart that compared Blu-ray and HD-DVD and it had DVD on there as a comparison. I thought it said the protective coat for Blu was mandatory and was optional for HD-DVD as well as DVD.

I will see if I can find it.

Edit: Found it Here. It is a Wikipedia page so it could have false info, but I dont think it is false.

I'm not sure if they've changed the recipe for the protective coating, but there have been reports of using different coating types on BD for a long time. I have noticed some newer BDs scratch a lot easier. At one time you could hardly scratch the disc's read surface with anything shy of a sharp piece of metal. But, I've run across several that act more like DVDs when cleaning in recent months.

Same here. Im so damn careful when I take my discs out of the case and go into the player. I dont let anyone else touch them at all!

Bull. You are feeling a difference in texture of the label, which is a far cry from feeling a different coating.

The other side of the Blu-Ray feels identical.
