Default Alien Vs Predator Looks Horrible!

I was really looking forward to seeing AVP in blu-ray. What a disappointment! Is it just me or does everyone think the transfer is terribly flawed? After seeing The Fantastic Four in blu-ray (which looked great!), I never would have suspected that blu-ray could have so much grain. Any other movies I should stay away from due to bad PQ?

Is is grainy or bad PQ? They actually aren't the same thing.

Grain may be showing an inherent limitation in the underlying film, which the BD transfer could be 100% accurately reproducing.

It is a definite debate right now whether cleanup should be employed or not. It's really an argument to many on the similar level as OAR v. full-frame.

My position is that permission should be sought, and approval of the results obtained from directors or DPs for any grain cleanup.

It is very important that intent not be wiped out in the rush to give everyone HD video-like presentations.

Hey, do you have a sharpness control on that particular input? If so, try reducing it. Panels are really supposed to be pass-thru's for HD (no processing) but if yours has a sharpness control, that would certainly do it. See if you have a noise reduction circuit as well.

I have this title and it looks razer sharp on my set up. Dark scenes can have just a touch of grain but if it looks bad then something is wrong with your setup

I think it looks great; like Ken said some grain in darker scenes but nothing bad.

I've watched it 4 times already. Only got 17 titles so tend to watch them over and over again. Slow time of the year after Xmas so not to much money for movies right now.

Anyone besides the OP with exactly one post to his unknown screen name with no specifics (equipment, setup, etc.) watch this thing?

FWIW, I've been hearing mostly good things about the disc. I haven't yet had a chance to see it for myself.

Hmmmm....

I have the Sony KDSR70XBR2 displaying from the Sony BDP-S1 Blu-Ray Player and I purchased Alien vs Predator and after reading this post, I viewed it a second time, looking a little more critically. The presentation IMO is steller, nothing to complain about. The detail is there. I have the sharpness setting on the TV 'Off', Iris setting to '1', Video Noise Reduction set at 'medium', Contrast at 60%, and brightness at 45%. This has yielded amazing images. So, the person complaining about the DVD, may actually have the settings on the TV all screwed up.

Cool

Wow! You guys are fast! OK, I admit I am only seeing it on 1080I with an HDMI cable. I have a Sony Wega Trinitron 32" CRT TV. I don't know what the numbers are. Are they on the back or something? I knew there was a chance that when I said bad PQ that someone might scold me but I took a chance because I am unquestionably lazy. Please pardon my newbie lack of detail.

It is, in fact, the grain about which I am complaining. Would a movie maker purposefully allow annoying grain in scenes where the movie watcher would negatively question its presence? Perhaps. If there is a grain inherent in the source material, then I understand that a blu-ray transfer may very well retain that grain. But I still think it sucks. Or I should say, I still think it's unfortunate.

Some respondants noticed grain. Others said the picture was stellar. I will see about adjusting my set. Hopefully, that will help. It's just that, as I said in my original post, Fantastic Four looks, well, fantastic! As does Underworld: Evolution. AVP does not.

P.S. I now have 2 posts to my name. I hope that gives me more street cred.

I agree, it actually is a very good transfer. I guess it all depends on the equipment you are using. You get what you pay for!

I just saw it over the weekend, I love it! I thought the pq was great.

Chad at Home Theater Spot gave it 4.5 stars for picture quality and I repect his reviews. He is using top notch gear and a huge screen that would show all the little blemishes etc. A Sony SXRD projector on a 92 inch screen.

OK. I agree with the idea that you get what you pay for. However, I have already noted that my system plays other blu-ray discs fine. Therefore, I think we would all agree that if a system displays 5 movies beautifully and 1 movie not so beautifully, the argument should stray from the "you get what you pay for" mentality and instead focus on the quality of the anomalous disc. I am willing to accept that the transfer of AVP is fine and instead submit that I must be focusing on what I consider to be to much unneeded grain in the source material. Perhaps I was expecting too much.

I still have to ask: Do you think, considering source material, blu-ray transfer and everything else you can think of, AVP looks as good as Fantastic Four and Underworld: Evolution? In other words, if you had to say which disc of the three looks best, would it really be AVP?

IMO - For these dark kind of movies, and you want the best of the two to display to others, as your reference disc, go with Underworld: Evolution, not only are you getting a very fine presentation, you'll be watching Kate !!!

I have this title as well and I thought the PQ was 4/5. The reflection off of the aliens were insane. Crisp picture. No complaints
