Question receiver with PS3 for $250 or less

I've done a lot of research on this for the last month, but just can't bring myself to pull the trigger yet... I want to be able to play lossless audio, but i don't have the budget right now to shell out 4 or 500 bucks for a receiver alone. I have noticed people talking about the yamaha 663 and the onkyo 605, but can't seem to find a good deal on those. I thought about the Sony DG520, but it only has HDMI pass-through. I'd like to be able to hear lossless audio coming from my PS3 on 5 channels for around $400, is it possible? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

New Sony STR-DG720, or a refurb Marantz 4001, or a refurb Onkyo 605.

I think I've decided to either go with the refurbed 5001 or a new 4001. Both
can be had at acessories4less for $299. I was looking at the Yamaha 663, I
think I can enjoy the Marantz and pocket the difference.

Yes, with your PS3 you will be able to play all the HD tracks.

Just picked up the Sony 720 last night and I was astonished at how much difference it made. I played 300 and it was just amazing. It does the DTSMA, True dolby and everything else. The sound is so much more crisper then before. Good upgrade for cheap if your BD player sends it out LPCM.

I could be wrong, but isnt the Marantz 4001 HDMI v1.1? If you do want a Marantz, go for the Marantz 4002 because it has HDMI v1.3.

You only need v1.1 for PCM. Since his PS3 is doing the decoding, the 4001 will be just fine.

Thanks for all the inputs everyone. I am thinking about going with the Sony 720. I was also looking at a Sony 520 (only have 5.1 speakers right now). Is there any difference between the two other than the extra 2 channels? Can the 520 play lossless audio? It's up for $149 at amazon right now, and if the only difference is the 2 extra channels, i'm aiming for that... otherwise the 720 looks good at best buy for $269.

The 520 will not accept PCM, you want the 720.

OP, just a question - the Marantz is only 249.00 no tax (unless you live in Florida) and free shipping - like Maverick's substitute RIO said in Top Gun "Hey it doesn't get any better than that"! Why the Sony 720 over the Marantz 4001 (unless you're just looking at HDMI 1.3 over HDIM 1.1).

Yes you can, but just to note - in the future - there's no such thing as 1080p sound - 1080p is a video spec.

I usually feel the same way.... Purchased everything New, but got the sr5001 to add to my bedroom, and got it refurbed (from them) and the manual/remote, etc. was still sealed in the original plastic...... Looks like my 7001 that I bought new.

You get a warranty, but again, I understand the hesitation to go with a refurb.

I just feel like if i'm going to shell out $250 for a receiver alone, i want it to be new. And i have heard good things about the 720, so i think i will be going for that... unless i hear any horror stories about it or anything like that. I have not completely written off the 4001 yet, but i will most likely get the 720 brand new from BB if it's only $270.
