I have a Samsung 1400 Blu player and an older Pioneer receiver (about 5-6yrs). I have been watching my blu rays in lossless using the analog cables. My reviever is starting to go on the fritz and I may be looking at purchasing a new receiver soon (the timing is not good). I am looking at either The Onkyo SR505S which does not have TrueHD, but does have an HDMI input but I could probably still use analog cables (for Lossless) or spending the extra $200 and getting Onkyo 606 which does have TruHD & DTSHD.
Since my Samsung 1400 decodes the TruHD itself, does my reciever also have to have TruHD to get TruHD or DTSHD? Since the 505 has HDMI inputs would it basically function the same as the 606? |

That may not apply to this situation however. |

The BD-P1400 can bitstream both of the HD audio codecs over hdmi, so you'll want a reciever that can decode those, in which case you'll have to go with the 605/606. The 1400 can only decode Dolby TrueHD in player, so by getting a new receiver and connecting by hdmi you'll be able to play all of your blu's with hd audio instead of just some.

For the money, the BD-P1400 is one of the best functional players out there when it comes to internal decoding. Assuming you are running the latest firmware update, the BD-P1400 can handle any codecs internally except for DTS HD, but you will still get the core from it which is better than nothing so you could roll with the analog connection if you are on a specific budget or something and the 606 would be stretching you out.

I have the Samsung Bd-P1400 and the onkyo 605 too.
It would be a waste of money to buy the 505. It has only HDMI Pass Thru. The 605/606 can actually read the HDMI inputs which allows you to enjoy the HD Soundformats withoout any hassle. Just connect the Samsung with the 605, you are gonna buy, set the Samsung to Bitstream output and there you go. The price difference between the 505 and 605 is only marginal. Also the 505 has no on-screen menu. Since the 1400 can't decode all codecs internally you should really get a receiver that can handle bitstream input |

A sales rep from Video Only told me that the 605/606 had HDMI inputs/outputs, but would not play true lossless audio ( no decoder)- he told me with my Samsung 1400 I needed to movie up to something like the Yahama 863 for something like that. Is he blowing smoke up my a$$ ?
