Default Dealer Data: Salespeople Push LCD Over Plasma

Consumer electronics sales people are more likely to recommend LCD TVs over plasma models by a more than three-to-one margin. That’s according to a survey released jointly this week by J.D. Power and Associates and Market Force Information.

According to the survey, titled the 2008 Television Retail Insights Report, salespeople are also less knowledgeable than they should be about the technologies, both telling customers about “burn in” and other problems with plasma that have largely been resolved, and also failing to disclose positive developments about LCD technology. The survey was based on a “mystery shopper” investigation with more than 2,000 participants.

“ While we see that salespeople are aggressively pushing shoppers to LCD sets, it is important for consumers to understand that plasma technology also offers a number of unique advantages, not the least of which is that inch for inch, plasma sets cost less than LCD sets,” J.D. Power senior director Larry Wu said as part of the announcement of the survey. “In addition, compared with most LCD sets, plasma TVs also display deeper blacks and show fast-moving objects better.”

Interesting indeed !!!

Not surprised by this, there are far more LCD models than Plasma models at the stores I frequent, though I don't know if the ratio is 3:1

IMO, they are doing a good job if they are informing customers of the risk of "burn in" and other issues, they still happen. Honestly as long as the saleperson lists all the pro's and con's of the different technologies as well as specific features on a set then they are doing a good job. Of course they need to ask questions as well as to what kind of room you have, lighting, etc as that factors into what display to go with.

This is the most overlooked issue I have seen when out and about with the sales folks or the so called sales folks.

If they ask questions at all aside from "do you want the 3 year or 5 year protection". Fry's has great prices but rarely do they seem to know anything about the actual products aside from a marketing brochure. Heck once in a while I'll see a guy with a Sony shirt on there to represent Sony tv's and they don't know much either, I asked the guy about 120hz sets and he had no clue about that or interpolation

If they're trying to tell consumers about "burn in" then they are DEAD WRONG because you have to be on a mission to burn in a plasma over the last 2-3 generations.

Basically, if you're not doing any of the following you're not at risk of burn in:

1) Installing your plasma as an overhead light in your kitchen
2) Leaving your plasma on CNN as company for the cat while you go away to visit Grandma for a week
3) Hooking your plasma up to a 24-hour feed of you local airports departure/arrivals feed

Plasma are cheaper than LCD, have better blacks, substantially better motion resolution (50% better than the 120Hz LCD sets) and are much better in a viewing environment than LCD.

LCD is more suited to a bright family room environment where lots of kids programs will be watched predominantly during the day time.
