Default I hate going to Circuit City and Best Buy!!!

ok so i went to pick up my tv and the guy asks me if i want to buy a home theatre system and so i tell him my receiver and says oh that does DTS HD and DOLBY TRUE HD and the only cable that supports that is the Monster 1000. now i have a 700 and 400 Monster (both bought before i found out what monoprice was) and i have a couple of HDMI cables from Monoprice that do 1.3. i guess my question is do i need to buy a Monster 1000 cable to get the DTS HD or DOLBY TRUE HD? or would any other cable work and that guy was trying to sell me some $150 cables??? or would i be fine with my Monster 700 and 400???

everytime i go to these stores i get so confused and dont know what to do.
but i am glad for this website because i know you guys will tell me the truth

Yes. Just stop overthinking it, and don't piss anymore money away on Monster.

Ignore them. Talk to them only to say " I would like this. Thank you." And "No I won't be adding to your commission today."

No. Just a reciever that support HDMI 1.1 or higher. You need 1.3 for DTS HD masters I believe. It's the electronics that need to be HDMI 1.3 compliant.. All HDMI cables support 1.0-1.3.. If that wasn't the case.. You'd have a ton of confusion & returns.

Good for marketing. What about 1080p certified. HDMI is HDMI.. Only the devices must be 1.3 compliant.

OK i was about to say . I just bought a onkyo 606 and i knew i was good in that area but thought you need some special HDMI 1.3 cables to get the lossless with it. I should be covered then it will be connected wit HDMI cables just not a new set

Yes.. as long as your receiver can pass audio through HDMI you will get the HD codecs.. Ala PS3 & 606.. The PS3 decodes it & the receiver out puts it as LPCM.. your receiver won't flash Dolby HD or DTS HD.. It will just read Multi PCM.. If your receiver did the decoding via bit stream, (raw data) the HD codec logos would be flashing on.

If you get one that decodes bit stream, you can have your receiver do the decoding. Some say it's better for the reciever to do the decoding over the player. Not sure what camp I'm in.. But wouldn't hurt to try it out.

That's what I hate about those stores!
More than 75% of "sales associates" don't either know what they are talking about, or tell you some extra bullshit on top of a few facts, that they just read off the box/sign while you're talking to them, to ensure a few more bucks on a sale!
I usually do quite extensive research online, preferably at the brand's website and forums like these to make sure that when I am ready to go and buy something in store I won't be fooled and call them out on lies!
Found this great store over here, Hawaii Digital, which is more costly than Best Buy or Circuit City, but the personal working there is the most knowledgeable that I know, and they will even tell you to go with something cheaper if it makes more sense to the whole setup.

I rather pay a few extra bucks and know that if I have questions or problems I can go back there and am being helped, rather than someone trying to sell me extra and unnecessary parts!

I know it sucks, but they're just doing their jobs. They have to hear it from their managers when they let someone walk out with a TV and no accessories.

It's their job to sell don't blame them lol I used to work for CC and the managers would tell us to sell at any cost which ended up with me quiting because I wouldn't lie to the customer anyways do some research at home before going to the store that way you know exactly what you are looking for and if a salesman asks you if you need help the only you should be asking is where is such and such item

Oh I do understand that it is their job, and I am not complaining that they are trying to sell you all the extra accessories. I mean in the end its up to the consumer to buy or or not.

The thing that just really pisses me off is that they try and sell you stuff that is either unnecessary or in some cases even incompatible!
What I am asking for is that those big chain stores enforce some new regulations that the sales people need to learn about certain products.
C'mon it can't be that hard, if car salesmen know all the little extras of all the cars on the lot!
If someone wants to sell me something, then I want them to be knowledgeable about it and not just read of the tag what I can do myself.
Also, in a lot of those retail places they try and showcase TVs and Audio equipment that is not even properly installed/adjusted! Just a quick "plug it in and it will do" kinda of thing. I am pretty sure that if certain staff members would spend some time with the more expensive products that are being shown off and get the best possible picture or audio quality out of it and then teach the sales team about the pros and cons they will be having a LOT more sales!

I don't want to go into one of those places, leave several thousand dollars there and then a day after have the worst case of buyers remorse because it is not what I expected it to be!

Thats what I thought, that you also need the 1.3 cable and any 1.3 cable would work! I bought a few sony 1.3 cables that said for PS3, but also used them on stand alone blu-ray players and damn if they dont work!
