Online retailer HDAddicts.com has alerted us the Viggo Mortensen Russian mob drama Eastern Promises is scheduled for a Blu-ray Disc release on October 14. Eastern Promises was originally released on HD DVD and presented in widescreen 1.85:1 1080p video and 5.1 Dolby Digital lossy audio. The move to Blu-ray should result in a jump to 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Supplemental features found on the HD DVD will likely also appear intact on Blu-ray. Those include a pair of featurettes: Secrets and Stories, and Marked for Life. Eastern Promises on Blu-ray will carry an SRP of $29.98. Check back regularly for high resolution cover art, finalized disc specs and pre-order information, all of which we expect on or shortly after Universal officially makes an announcement. |

Can't wait to get this movie. This is one of the many I am waiting for from Uni. I hope they give us a release date for The Kingdom very soon(seeing that it was on the slip inside the Mummy movies) and I hope that we get Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead before end of the year.

Since Uni is also putting Run Fat Boy Run out on Blu this year, we may actually see Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead included in a 3 pack. I am really hoping for this 3 pack to happen. |

Perhaps it will be called the Blu Ray Gangster Pack. That would be great to buy American Gangster, Eastern Promises and Casino is a three pack, even better if it gets the $42.00 sale price that DVD pacific is selling the "Halloween" and "Action" samplers for.

I hope they do this, it's a very good idea. I'd pre-order it immediately.

Actually, Run, Fat Boy Run, rights for DVD / Blu-ray releases are owned by Warner Brothers. So, you won't see a 3 pack for that, but I am sure that Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead come out when Simon Pegg's new movie comes to theaters in October, "How to Lose Friends & Alienate People." |

Minor correction, there. The HDDVD wasn't 'lossy' audio, it was actually TrueHD lossless.
Own it, but haven't watched it yet. I might give it a look later and let you folks know what you can expect in terms of sharpness, etc. Incidentally, have there been any serious comparisons of HDDVD and Blu-Ray encodes of Universal titles? I understand the bit-rates are higher, but I'm wondering if things like edge-enhancement and DNR have been removed/reduced or added/increased for the blu-ray? (On that note, it will be especially interesting to see comparisons of Blu-Ray "Apollo 13" or "Backdraft" when they get released. Those are exceptionally (wonderfully) grainy HDs, and I'm wondering (a) if a bigger bitrate might actually help there and (b) if Universal tries some sort of DNR for the rerelease. I could have my facts wrong here, but I think I read somewere that one of Spielberg's reasons for supporting Blu was the possibility that Blu-Ray discs could better render fine grain. HighDefDigest' reviews of Paramount titles (released in different encodes on Bluray and HD) seem to suggest there was absolutely no difference between a 50gig MP4 encode and a 25gig VC1 (we'll avoid the issue of MPEG2 vs VC1) |
