PiP decoding, PS3, cores, and other stuff

If Pip is turned into a software issue on BD, that opens the door for widely varying PIP experiences across different BD players. Good news: if its software than all players should be firmware upgradable to handle it, if they cannot already do so via some trick. However: The PS3 has howevermany procesing units and of course should have the power to do this but what type of processor or ASIC are in the other players? They don't have an unlimited # of cycles for regular decoding plus whatever software tricks are needed for the PIP.

I view this as a HUGE concern. While I personally care very little for these features its keeping Batman Begins from showing in my home theater and it is the only thing I can think of that people can point to and say "BD can't do this".

Well, HD-DVD decoding on the 360 takes up 98% of all 3 cores on the xbox 360 and it is done all through software for picture and picture. The PS3 has MUCH MUCH MUCH more powerful raw processing, especially for video date, so it should be able to do PIP while shaving and checking stocks. I have no doubt that the PS3 will be the first to get the best features, that is a given.

Sure, but what about the standalone players that don't have PS3 power? You have to author with those in mind.

sorry but i do not recall the site but it is said that 3 of the 6 spe of the cell are used while watching a bd movie so technicaly the ps3 could decode 2 diffrent streams at once and make a pop picture on graphic

They will have new SOC chips from Sigma Designs that will take care of that for them. The PS3 can do what the SOC chips can through raw power and software, the stand alones will get chip solutions.

You can ask but he probably can't answer. He's with Sony Pictures Entertainment, not with Sony Computer Entertainment. That is, I assume he's a he.

The FAT32 file system has a max capacity of 8 TB. Through Windows, the max is 32GB. But, most formating tools don't go above 127GB, that will probably be your limit.

using NTFS just puts you in bed with the devil. All this sounds like a damn good reason to switch to ext3 - 1k block size yields a max file size of 16G with a 2T max file system size.... and if you make the block size bigger, the max file size and system size increase accordingly.
