Just like many of you, I want the very best quality out of my blu-ray discs, this means high bitrates, loseless audio and no dnr.
It occured to me that the quality of my picture was being compromised, by the quality of my sound and vice versa. Some of my blu-rays use up a lot of space having 2-3 loseless or uncompressed tracks on them. Thats got to be cutting into my PQ. Those uncompressed tracks also use up some of the bitrate also affecting my PQ. The same goes with extras. Now I realize its probably too late to use this idea in the blu-ray spec, so I guess this is mostly about next-gen formats. What if every player had a reasonably large, easily changable HDD and each player was required to have access to an online store. On this store there were audio tracks for download. Before you even got the movie (or while you are out getting it), you can go on this store and download the audio track you desire. That means if I only speak English, I don't have to waste space on the disc with 13 other languages. Now when I pop my movie into the player, it activates the audio file on my HDD. The file is only allowed to play when the movie is in the player. The soundless disc starts playing with the absolute highest bitrate and highest quality possible, while my player streams the HD audio from my player to my receiver. If I want to watch extras for this movie, space isn't having to be wasted on the disc either, i can just go to this online store and download what I want to watch, so my disc isnt full of crap I don't want to watch. This way the disc isn't having to waste bitrates and space on audio and extras and can fully focus it on PQ, while a HD download of audio provides me with high resolution audio. You could litterly achieve a higher bitrate and more space than your disc could utilize. I could also see this being an effective tool against piracy, as maybe the studios could put typical security on the disc plus another code to get the audio file to play from the HDD. That way if you were able to pirate the disc you would need to break two codes or not have any sound. Only con is it might not be as easy to bring a movie over to a friends house, but as early adopters we should know that from this gen. Sorry if this was a dumb idea and a waste of your time. |
