Is that the scene you're talking about? I remember I had rented the DVD and it had the subtitles. I personally don't own Emily Rose on Blu-ray, but I would also like to know from others if it has the subtitles because I would like to buy it eventually. |

I knew it!!! I remembered there being subtitles for these scenes and thought maybe I was just crazy when the film didn't have them on Blu-Ray. So now is Sony going to fix this or will this end up the same as King Arthur?

I have this thing with both my sony players (DvD and Blu)
I can turn the subtitles on and when I turn them off, they still appear for certain things (like newspaper headlines or written text in the movie that is in another language.) If I stop, power down and restart again with no subs, then it is fine. Whoa... |

I can't believe the subtitles have been removed from those scenes. The sequence in the barn loses impact when you can't understand the dialogue between Jennifer & Tom.
I wonder what Sony would have to say about it. I'd be interested to know!! |

Considering how long it's been out, I seriously doubt they're planning a fix. My advice: contact Bill Hunt at thedigitalbits. Of all the online bloggers currently reporting on the industry, he seems to have the loudest voice that carries the most weight. And, as with any disc defect, the more people who actively write in to complain, the greater the chance of being heard.

Thought I'd bump this to ask: does anyone know if any of the international releases have the English subtitles during the barn scene (without having to turn them on)?

Hello
First off, you’re absolutely right. On the standard DVD I first bought, there were subtitles every time she spoke in a language other than English. And they were left off the Blu-ray version. The reason was a decision filmmakers and distributors made. Apparently when it was shown in theaters, which I never saw, there were no subtitles. When it went to standard DVDs they added the subtitles. Then, when they were getting ready to put it on Blu-ray, they wanted it to mirror the theater experience. And since there weren’t subtitles when it was in theaters, they left it off the Blu-ray version. Since nobody talked to us about it (apparently because we’re just the the ones that had to come up with the money to purchase it and we don’t matter that much) they put it out the way they wanted to. On a personal note, I don’t think it mattered that much one way or the other. If I remember correctly, there were a couple of lines in her bedroom and three or four lines in the barn. It’s not like you can’t follow what’s going on in the film without them. But everyone is different, so as they say, whoever they are, you can’t always have it your way. As a quick example, I always watch the directors cut of The Exorcist. It addresses a few things that weren’t addressed in the original cut, plus I think the ending is 300% better than the original. Kinderman talks with Father Dyer about how Regan is doing, they bring up the same routine about movies that Kinderman had earlier with Father Karras, and once they agree that everything is OK, they go off and have lunch together. It just feels more finished. They agree that everything is great and they can move on. But I know people who refuse to watch that version. To each their own I guess. I hoped this helped Greg |
