I like that kind of movie where the super strong guy does not quite look like it.

This is a great movie. Any chance that it'll be all region? I would definitely spring for this one.

This was an interesting watch. However, I noticed that the Blacks were off on this title looking more gray. This is like the third Asian title where I've noticed this. I saw this on Butterfly Lovers (Mei Ah), Battle of Wits (UK Metronome release), and now Zatoichi (UK Artificial Eye). They all look as if they were using PC gray level (0-255) instead of video gray level (16-235). I've yet to see such problems with any western titles. Anyone else notice this?

Can't speak for those other titles, but having owned both the UK tin and the HK 2 disc DVDs of Zatoichi, I can say that the washed out look has always been there.

I can only comment on Zatoichi as I saw it theatrically - yes, the weak color-scheme is native to the print.

It's more than just a drab and weak colors. I really think the black is way off. If you adjust your contrast/brightness so that the black is black again, then the entire picture looks much better (still with weak colors, but much better). I really think that someone screwed up somewhere with the black level during the encoding process with this title.

My OPPO BDP-83 arrived yesterday. With it's PAL capabilities, Artificial Eye's Zatoichi opened up and played without a hitch.

Does anyone know if the case has a 22mm spine or a 12mm spine?

Ah, well. I might just have to get the UK release anyway. The US is out of print and the rights are at Echo Bridge. Who knows when they'll release it and if they'll include Japanese audio on the disc.

Yeah, I had an opportunity to buy it off of a member from the forum before the US release by Disney came out, but I passed on it. Given that it's only £7, that's not that high for it.

Edit: It's a shame Sonatine didn't get a Blu-ray since the DVD for Zatoichi in the US contained it with it.

Mind you can bypass the PAL 'problem' quite easily usually: PAL workaround -always works for me on a Region A setup.

I thought this was a very nice video transfer.

My Insignia player and Vizio HDTV are both 50hz compatible, so it's no problem for me at all.

I just wish more of Beat Takeshi work was available, I am happy Arrow gave us Battle Royale, but I'd honestly rather have Dolls on Blu-ray. I thought Dolls was just an all around beautifully made and sad film.
