Default digital copies

How many of you use them on the additional copies for blu ray. I have one from The Bank Job that I cant imagine using.

Most of the digital copies on Blu-rays that are released from Lionsgate (such as The Bank Job) and 20th Century Fox (such as next week's Street Kings) will play on video iPods, iPod Touch, and the iPhone. And Warner Bros. has recently done a digital copy addition for their Blu-ray release of 10,000 B.C. that will be able to play on iPods as well. But digital copies that are on New Line's Blu-rays, such as the recently released Dark City, will not work on iPods.

Hope this helps, theprophecy247!

Default Digital Copies in it's many forms

The studios are finally embracing the technologies that have made online stores like iTunes a success. Now, if only they could agree on the same guidelines for the new Digital Copies.

I work at an electronics store in Omaha, and if there's one thing I always check it's which of the new releases carry digital copies. So far, I've found that if 20th Century Fox or Lionsgate have one, it will be a universal copy, and work with PCs, Macs, iPods, and anything that can play Windows Media.

On the other hand, if you go to Sony, they of course have their own devices they want you to use, so those digital copies only work on PCs and PSPs. And, oddly enough, arn't on BDs yet.

Warner Bros. is the really strange one, as only the BD version of 10,000 BC works the same way as 20th Century Fox does, but some recent releases like Lost Boys: The Tribe has a release that's only good for PCs and media players that can read Windows Media.

Disney's upcoming copies, called DisneyFile I don't know about yet. I can only hope that they work with Macs and iPods, being that Steve Jobs is on the Disney board.

Universal however, is the most restrictive copy of all the studios so far. It's only available on (as an example) the DVD edition of The Mummy, and only allows a copy to one PC. No media player, no Mac support, just a PC.

Anyone happen to hear if there's going to be one form of digital copy, or even just what the heck is going on with it?

Digital Copies are a WASTE! WASTE WASTE! Watch your blu rays in 1080P and see them the best way possible. If you think watching your film on a small little screen is cool then so be it.

If you love your digital copies then you love the nice artwork FOX does for these titles ruining decent cover art to PROLCAIM DIGITAL COPIES COME GET YOUR EXTRA DISC so you can see the film how the filmmakers intended! Look at how we ruined the box art! (eample The Happening) I would never buy the Happening but when they do ruin something I do want to see by screwing with the cover art then it will be NO SALE. Digital copies belong in a bargin bin or online.

You do realize the purpose of a Digital Copy, correct? It comes with your Blu-Ray. So you can still watch the movie on Blu-Ray. Then you use the Digital Copy and play it on your PSP or iPod. So if you are traveling you can still watch the movie. Its a convinence thing, not a quality thing. So you get the best of both worlds.

Disney has a pretty good idea with Prince Caspian. Two versions, one with and one without the digital copy. I like the digital copies to watch while I am traveling, so I would buy the version with it every time.

I guess I am shocked at how we as blu-ray consumers who love or at least that is how I think - love to see a film the best possible way. I think having iPods laptops to watch stuff on, but to take a feature film and be wowed by it on a small little screen is odd to me.

You will NEVER see Criterion offer their films with a digital copy they know that the presentation of a film is what the experience is not on your iPod etc.

My digital copies just sit in the case... maybe I should sell them off since so many thrive on owning them.

When I see a digital copy released I feel sad, just means someone will probably watch it they way it was NOT meant to be seen. I also think it is a waste of raw materials to make the discs, and to me it is just filler.

I already have seen all the movies I have digital copies of on Blu-Ray, I know what the best possible presentation looks like. Watching a movie on an airplane is no different than reading a book to me, just a way to kill a couple of hours in the air...

No one has stated that they are 'WOWed' by the Digital Copy. We realize that Blu-Ray is the best format available at this time. Its just a really good way to watch the movie when you are on the road as there aren't any portable Blu-Ray players available at this time and if you have a PSP/iPod its good thing to have as not everyone travels with their Blu-Ray player and connectors as well as a 1080p television.

If you do not have a PSP/iPod/Zune then yes it would be a good idea to just sell your digital copies on Ebay or something. Or you can download it to your computer (if you own one) and watch it there if you wish, unless you have a disk drive that support Blu-Ray then its pointless.

I agree. I don't see why wanting to view a movie in the best quality at home doesn't mean you don't want to see it on your portable media player.

One use does not exclude another.

Personally, I can be travelling upto 5 hours a day (on a bad day if I miss one of my train connections) and I'd sure as hell like to pass the time by reading, listening to music or *gasp* watching a film I already own on a handy device designed for such a purpose.

Sadly, the UK doesn't seem to get Digital Copies at all, so its a bit moot. But if you ask me, DVD ripping has gotten out of hand, and if the studios aren't careful with their European releases, Blu-ray ripping will get to be just as bad.

Give people a legal option, and ripping software won't be needed at all.

I don't like that Disney is charging extra for Digital Copies (and giving two releases, furthering confusion among consumers) - we are already paying premium prices (are prices EVER coming down??!!!!) - charging me $5 extra bucks for a tiny, tiny version of the movie is just cr@p.

Next, they'll be charging us for PiP, and BD-Live.

I Completely agree. I never understood watching movies like this unless your a kid in a car with a psp. It seems like such a waste to have all of these extra discs that I will never use.

It is what it is, just an add on. It's a nice to have so when folks that travel (I do a good amount for work) I can still watch a few of the movies I like while I'm sitting in the middle of nowhere in a hotel that only has basic cable and maybe HBO.....

Fine those who like digital copies fine. I just don't think that presentation is the kind that the filmmakers intended. I don't think they worked that hard to think, "I can't wait till someone watches my film on their iPod."

Everyone says well I got 4 hour flights etc... ok fine take you digital copies, I sometimes wonder what travelers did before?

+1

If someone wants a 'digital copy' for an iPod or whatever, more power to them. I do not want to pay more for something that I'll never use.

I really wish we could move on past this debate. I personally think that the 'digital copy' should be an extra charge that should be paid upon download or something.

I bought a laptop computer with a built-in Blu-ray drive so that I could watch my Blus on the go!
