So my girlfriend bought a new home theater in a box and its 1000 watts, how are these things giving out 1000watts ?????
when most Decent/high end traditional recivers are only like up to 200 watts why use traditional Home theater equipment thats more expensive, when you could be using those? |

Also, there are "good" methods of measuring power (watts) and less-good methods. We don't know which method the HTIB manufacturer used. |

First off, do not believe everything you read, in any real world situation you won't get 1000 watts from a htib. Also, remember that all watts are not created equal, quality is far more important than quantity, 50 quality watts will be much better than 120 crappy watts.

Could be the front panel is lit by 10 100 watt light bulbs? Most likely the number represent the peak that all channels together could output in a single brief spike of uselss power. |

No HT in a box or receiver can output continuously even the stated 100 watts or 150 watts per channel. It is all marketing hype and B.S.
Cinepro is one of the companies that makes extremely powerful separate amplifiers. Their top-of-line amplifier is Cinepro 4K6 MK4 SE-Gold. It has 6 channels and weighs 86 lbs. These are the specs: Multi-Channel Mode 475 Watts per Channel, 8 Ohms 650 Watts per Channel, 6 Ohms 800 Watts per Channel, 4 Ohms 1200 Watts per Channel, 2 Ohms Mono Mode 1200 Watts, 8 Ohms 1400 Watts, 4 OHMs http://www.cinepro.com/ |

I stopped reading right there. . . You let your girlfriend purchase A/V equipment without your approval? Is this a short term relationship? The only way this should happen is if you are also a girl. Seriously, it's time to lay down some ground rules.

this is an extract from a sony instruction manual quoting power outputs
as you can see it is measured in RMS, as all good watts should be ![]() but it states running at 10% distortion, which is so bad you wouldnt be able to hear much, and its only measured at 1khz, which is around the normal frequency of speech, really good av equipment specs are rated at less than 0.01% THD (total harmonic distortion) and from 20hz-20khz as a minimum (often much more) for example my amplifier is rated at 130wrms/channel @ 8 ohms with 0.00028% THD (25 year old sansui, built like a tank), also the sony is quoted @3 ohms, and as a rule of thumb if you half the impedance you double the power output (if your power supply can handle it) so again as an example, my amplifier will kick out 260w @ 4ohms/channel , and 520w@ 2 ohms (briefly) last but by no means least, there is no way in hell, that the crappy speakers they supply could handle that power, if by some amazingly magical feat the amplifier could output anything like its supposed power (which it cant) hope this clarifies for you ![]() Last edited by maverik1979; 08-19-2008 at 03:44 AM. |

Seriously, look at the utility power it requires, in Watts, and multiply by .75. Assuming between the transformer (in)efficiency and the power cost for the rest of the system is only 25%, the remaining is what is left to possibly power the speakers. Watts is Watts. I'd guess it can't do continuous, peak, or RMS at 1KW. Given efficiencies from AC to DC that means it's drawing better than 10A from the wall to do 1K. Yikes! I hope her hair drier isn't or iron isn't on the same circuit!

Our next step is getting her an HDtv, which i am picking out, im really picky about these
and the time of buying mine i had to go super cheap, and it looks kind of ugly ( the screen housing) so i hope to avoid this with hers eventually il get her a real reciver but for now the HTIB well do. i was just currious on how such a tiney and small piece of equipment, could do 1000 watts thanks for your answers |
