Default Lamps in LCD flat panels?

I was under the impression that even the new FLat Panel LCDs have lamps but someone told me it doesn't and that it is no longer rear projected like those old rear projection LCDs. so it does not need a lamp. Is he right? If so, how come I keep hearing about the lamp life of my TV?

And....those old rear projected LCDs, are those considered DLPs now? I kind of thought they were different technology but apparently I'm wrong. Anyhow, just curious. Thanks
