The Sony S-300 does not decode DTS-HD, but will decode PCM and Dolby TrueHD with the latest firmware update.

One problem is that your receiver does not decode DTS-HD. Thats' correct, the STR-DG820 DOES NOT have the capability of decoding the newest audio codecs such as Dolby TrueHD, DTS MA (Master Audio), or DTS-HD HR (High Resolution). Sony's web site and advertising is rather deceptive when stating "the STR-DG820 decodes the latest audio formats from Dolby® Labs and DTS® making this model fully compatible with Blu-ray Disc™. Now, you can hear the original mix of your favorite BD titles regardless of audio format." The trick is that decoding Dolby TrueHD, DTS MA, or DTS-HD HR by the player or receiver is not mandatory, even though Blu-ray supports and is compatible with these audio formats. The sentence bolded and italicized above is paraphrased from the third sentence of the STR-DG820's description on Sony's web site:

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...52921665364791

Unfortunately, you have to click-on the "Specifications" tab and read the "Audio Features" to realize that the STR-DG820 doesn't decode the higher audio codecs. According to Sony's web site, listed below are what the STR-DG820 decodes:

Audio Features
Digital Cinema Sound™ Technology : Yes

Dolby® Digital Decoding : Yes

Dolby® Digital EX Decoding : Yes

Dolby® Pro Logic® Decoding : Yes

Dolby® Pro Logic® II Decoding : Yes

Dolby® Pro Logic® IIX Decoding : Yes

dts® 96/24 Decoding : Yes

dts® Decoding : Yes

dts® NEO:6 Decoding : Yes

dts®-ES Decoding : Yes

Specifications from Sony:

http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/...52921665364791

And I don't think that a simple firmware update will give your receiver the ability to decode Dolby TrueHD, DTS-MA, or even (the lossy, but still better sounding than standard DTS 5.1) DTS-HR. Does anyone here really think that Sony builds that capability into their lower-end receivers and doesn't charge for it? Lets be real.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it is what it is. Can you return the STR-DG820 for another receiver? You're going to have to pony-up more cash to get the the capability to decode Dolby TrueHD, DTS MA, or DTS-HD HR.

Keith

Hmmm....thats' interesting. The Sony web site specs are inaccurate then. I just downloaded the Operating Instructions of the Sony web site and it does list Dolby TrueHD, but not DTS-HD.

I apologize for incorrectly stating that the STR-DG820 does not decode Dolby TrueHD, as that was based on reading the specs on the Sony web site. I guess Sony needs to update both their web site and Operating Manual then.

1st of all, what are you using as a blu-ray player? And how stupid is Sonys tech support to tell you that you need a 7.1 hookup to get HD sound. The majority of HD codecs are in 5.1 anyway, and if you were watching one with 7.1 you just wouldnt hear the surround backs.

Ok Gents, unlike the OP, I AM using a PS3 connected by HDMI to the STR-DG820. I have the PS3 set to output LPCM.

From my understanding, If I select DTS-HD in the Blu-Ray movie's set up menu, then what I am hearing is DTS HD, its just that the 820 is not displaying the "DTS-HD" it only says "Linear PCM" Am I right??

Kinda Blows that the 820 doesnt display DTS-HD or Dolby True HD if being fed LPCM.

It is right. If it is decoded internally and sent PCM, it will only display "Multichannel PCM". You can hit the select button on your PS3 remote to see the codec. If you want to see the lights, you will need a player that will bitstream the codecs (i.e. Sony BDP-S350). It is that way with all receivers that accept a PCM signal.
