Default Windows 7 Shooting For 15 Second Boot Time

http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/archive/200...rformance.aspx

Quote:
Because systems and configurations differ, boot times can vary significantly. This is verified by many lab results, but can also be seen in independent analysis, such as that conducted by Ed Bott. Sample data from Ed’s population of systems found that only 35% of boots took less than 30 seconds to give control to the user. Though Ed’s data is from a small population, his data is nicely in line with what we’re observing. Windows Vista SP1 data (below) also indicates that roughly 35% of systems boot in 30 seconds or less, 75% of systems boot in 50 seconds or less.

..

From our perspective, too few systems consistently boot fast enough and we have to do much better. Obviously the systems that are greater than 60 seconds have something we need to dramatically improve—whether these are devices, networking, or software issues.
my xp machine boots up fairly fast, never timed it tho. its probably about the same amount of time for my mac if i think about it tho, but the mac is pretty slow so that could be the reason there. i'm down for 15 seconds tho

i'll save everyone the trouble and say microsoft sux! booo hiss

Leopard boots pretty fast. Takes about 20-30 seconds on my older iMac.

i think most of the slowness on my mac is the lame hard drive. otherwise it'd kick my pc's butt. haven't messed with leopard yet tho

Slow down (if I may say so) let us not take this on simple face value and wait to see. From experience and when it comes to Microsoft, what is announced and what actually end up being are usually two different things. Booting time depends on many factors and with no final version out there yet I say seeing is believing so I'll see before I believe.

I have vista ultimate on my laptop and it boots in probably about 20 seconds. I was kind of surprised.

With all the security processes in Vista, 20 seconds ? no way unless your laptop is connected to BigBlue

You probably have a dual core so you can begin working after 20 seconds while the security processes are still loading

What is "boot time"?

My XP takes 20-30 seconds to boot, and then 3-4 minutes to login to a usuable state as everything under the sun starts up and configures. That's with a fast processor and plenty of DRAM.

In both Ed’s sample and our telemetry data, boot time is meant to reflect when a machine is ready and responsive for the user. It includes logging in to the system and getting to a usable desktop.

Well, if they can do what they are saying, I'm all for it. I have a feeling though that the 15 have to be with certain hardware specs.

I'll believe it when I see it. Microsoft has a habit now of over promising and under delivering on their products. The real problem is that Microsoft is unwilling to cut ties with legacy products.

Microsoft already had an Operating System which could boot in 15 seconds. It was called DOS!

Since Windows Microsoft is famous for bloat code. The hardware to run the prior Operating Systems was always 1 or 2 generations behind to get it up to speed. Even then much of it is still slower than DOS.

My next computer will probably have a Flashram storage disc, as some notebooks have today. That is the best way to bring it up to speed.

As a storage medium, hard disc drives meet the storage need, but less on speed.

What about the crap that loads on start-up?
I would love winblows to work on that part, 15 second boot or 20 doesn't really make a difference.

OMG you are so smart!!! Can I be your number one fan?

Besides the obvious that you have to turn it off, genius, for it not to start up there is another load of shit that works underneath the coat, especially as the time goes on and you install more and more on your PC. You're just one angry b. aren't ya?

of course it will. i'm sure it's not going to load that fast on a pentium 2 with 256Mb or RAM.
