Yep I've heard about this beta version. The new Windows looks too much like Vista for my taste but let us hope it loads much faster and that all the issues with its predecessor will be worked out when the final release is available in about a year from now.

well vista isn't nearly as bad as people would let you think since the service pack, but from every preview i've read..its everything vista should have been, and probably actually worth upgrading to. it still has a ways to go, so we'll see i suppose.

i might actually need a new pc for windows 7 and a new mac for 10.5. ouch!

Although the name change has been noted....

There is just one thing I totally disagree with: the name Winows 7 when this is actually the 9th iteration of the OS. Let me demonstrate.

- Windows 1 (First version unknown to the masses)
- Windows 2 (Small changes and still not popular)
- Windows 3 (First popular version especially with version 3.11)
- Windows 95 (4th windows)
- Windows 98 (5th Windows)
- Windows 2000/Millennium (6th Windows)
- Windows XP (7th Windows)
- Windows Vista (8th Windows)
- Windows 7 (As you can see the 9th Windows)

That's not really a separate version of Windows though.

Much like XP has different versions, along with Vista.

that's still comparing red aples to green grannysmith apples.

NT made a name for itself with Windows 3 series. It really came into its own with Win 2000 Pro. That's when Microsoft combined NT features with mainstream Windows home user features and made a good, strong, sturdy OS.

Windows 95, 98, and ME were all part of Version 4 of windows, just different builds. Windows 2000 (NT 5.0) was the first version 5 quickly followed by the consumer version XP (which is version 5). Vista marked version 6, and so Windows 7 is a perfectly valid name based on their own build history. I'm also glad that they went back to numbers and dropping the arbitrary names.

Windows 7 is shaping up to be a pretty solid looking OS.

I'm looking forward to

Why not just get a new Mac for 10.5, and Mac BootCamp software to run whichever new version of Windows V(beep!) actually works?
(Although those only run on the Intel-chip Macs, and I'm still stuck here with the last of the PowerMac chip versions...)

2 different uses. windows would be a desktop, osx would be a laptop.

Based on what I have heard, I too am looking forward to try this new OS.
As for your explanation into legitimizing 7 as the correct number for the next iteration I think it seems a bit confusing to consider 98 and 2000 as just what ? service packs of 95 ? but okay if that's the way it is.

Just 98, 2000 is NT 5 and the first start of version 5 of windows. It is just the way Microsoft has always numbered their versions. Just like Mac has been on version 10 of their OS since 2001. They've released 7 updates of it, but still consider it to be version 10.

I only had one minor issue with Vista which was that a free version of McAffe virus scan I have from aol would have issues with vista. I use a different virus scan now. Other than that, I havn't had any other issue (other than I could use a extra gig of ram (my pc currenty has 1 gig and can go upto 2 gigs).

My initial reception of Vista was one of pain, frustration, disdain, followed by utter hatred. This was due to the fact that I had to sell a Lenovo Laptop my brother bought which had full fledged Vista Business installed. The specs on the laptop were alright but Vista was slower than an Obese man running the last mile in a 10K (providing he can make it that far), but I digress.

I recently bought an Elite Machine from HP which has 8 GB ram, quad core 2.7GH processing power, and a 750GB sata drive and it was open boxed so that Vista had all of the unnecessary rubbish HP installs on a new machine completely wiped and I was floored and how fast Vista was. That changed my perception drastically. However, I was still quite annoyed with it's cumbersome wireless setup, incompatability with older SCSI cards, Non linear editing cards like canopus' DVStorm2, etc., and the utter maddening UAC.

After disabling UAC, things get a nicer. Still prefer XP, but by my research, it's looking like Windows 7 will be a true successor to XP.

Default Video: Windows 7 promises faster boots and up to 15% better battery life

http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/06/v...5-better-batt/

Quote:
Now that Windows 7 has launched into pre-Beta, Microsoft has joined the world in Vista-bashing as they look to differentiate their newest OS from the incumbent. Speaking to its hardware partners at WinHEC, Microsoft is promising faster shutdown and startup times and less power consumption than its beleaguered predecessor despite the two sharing the same code base. In addition to an overall reduction in the number of services launched at startup, faster booting is achieved by loading device drivers in parallel instead of sequentially. Windows 7 also manages wireless radios better allowing them to drop below 100% power draw while managing the connection. And by tweaking the OS kernel, the CPU can sometimes run at a lower frequency and stay idle longer. This results are a minimum of 11% better battery life for Windows 7 compared to Vista -- and we're still only talking about pre-Beta Windows 7 software, mind you. Nice. Windows 7 also promises better memory management. So instead of managing all the background windows, Win7 offloads this to the GPU, for example -- system memory is then free for your applications and data. Check the trio of videos demonstrating these improvements after the break.
