Out of curiousity, what were the big differences?
The movie had a fight club, matrix rip-off quality to it.....not to say I didn't enjoy the film, but it felt so familiar to those to films when I was expecting something new and unique. |

The script was written back when the comic book was still in its first issue, so everything from the second issue on has nothing to do with the film itself.
The fraternity was actually a group of supervillains that'd banded together. For the most part, the villain of the story was Mister Ricktus (mentioned only briefly in the movie as someone an assassin had killed), a man who'd died, discovered there was no heaven and returned to life so jaded by the experience that he became a supervillain. Mister Ricktus wanted control of the fraternity and killed Sloan very early on as a means to that end. The shootout in the supermarket, was actually a shootout in a deli, where Fox shoots random civilians. Wesley also goes on to kill innocent people, really whomever he feels mistreated him over the years. The story takes place in an alternate reality where there used to be superheroes and supervillains, but the supervillains banded together and killed all of the superheroes decades ago (and then erased all memory and history of these superpowered individuals from the public consciousness). In the comic, William's dad fakes his own death in order to bring William into the fraternity and take his place. William accepts his dad's death by the very end of the graphic novel (pretty much the opposite of the film). Sloan is a short white haired man (picture a miniature Doc Brown), William Gibson looks like Eminem and Fox looks like Jada Pinket Smith. The fraternity has the ability to cross over into alternate dimensions and fight superheroes in the dimensions where they weren't eradicated. Really, aside from Sloan and Fox, none of the major peripheral character crossed over into the film from the comic, mainly because they happened to have superpowers and each an appearance you'd expect a supervillain to have. Wanted the comic has more in common with Watchmen, whereas Wanted the movie has more in common with Fight Club and The Matrix (as you mentioned). None, that I recall, of the visuals particular to the film were in the comic (aside from the shooting the wings off the flies). Despite my preference for the comic over the film, the film really does have a much better ending. The ending of the graphic novel didn't really feel like an ending. Its obvious that Mark Millar (the creator of Wanted) was trying to duplicate the sense of humor of Chuck Pallahniuk (writer of Fight Club)...especially with the ending, but didn't succeed as well as the writer of the film version of Wanted did. |
