Is anyone having issues playing Top Gun Blu Ray on the Sony BDP S500? I have purchased two copies and am running firmware version 4.0....no luck

You need to be more specific with the errors that you are having with TG. I had an issue playing TG om my Pioneer 05 player. In my case the movie would lock up just after the Paramount splash screen (13 second hang). Pioneer issued a firmware update that fixed the problem.

By the way, the workaround was to press stop and play and then the movie played fine.

Top Gun is awesome on Blu-ray.

The first copy I bought would lock up in various places - splash screen as you indicated and sometimes at the menu. At both stages I would restart and wait while the loading process resumed. I then upgraded my firmware and bought another copy. This time I get nothing at all but a message on the blu ray that says "can't play". I suppose there is a chance that I bought two bad copies. Every other blu ray works as does SD discs.

After you did the firmware update, did the player reset itself? If not, or don't recall, try a manual reset. I don't have the S500, but my S301 player hasn't been resetting automatically after the lastest firmware updates. I don't know if that's what's going on with your player or not. My S301 has no problems playing Top Gun. Yours shouldn't either. Try resetting your player. Hopefully that'll fix the glitch.
