Default Electronic Delivery = More Profitable than DVD/Blu-ray?

From IMDb.com

Quote:
- "Studios can earn far more by selling their films on the Internet and on cable than on DVD, Time Warner chief Jeff Bewkes told a Goldman Sachs investors conference in New York Wednesday. Each electronic sell-through, he observed, produces $13-14 in profits for a studio versus about $10 for a DVD. He also noted that with improved quality of product available online, including high-definition downloads, the competition from camcorded bootleg movies has lessened. Online piracy, he indicated, had "flattened out" over the past 18 months."

Are things different down in the States?

Up here in Canada I don't think there's a service for folks who would want to digitally buy a movie via cable.

There's Itunes {I think} but that's internet.

Give me special features anyday, I'll take my Blu-Ray rather than one copy of a movie that's downloaded to a hard drive.

If the Hard Drive F's up or the Cable Box has to be returned, you lose all the movies, and have wasted your money.

Thanks, but no thanks.

I don't see downloads completely replacing physical media such as Bluray discs.
Maybe downloads will be complementary like downloadable (smaller) games through the Playstation Network are.

Surely, this is just proof that digital downloads are vastly overpriced...

Or is it just me?

Wait till it moves on from cyber-geeks to regular people and then they have to do tech support for that download.

There goes the profit.

p.s.- Hard drives are neat but I prefer better archive methods like optical disc.

A shelf full of movies looks cooler to show off than a HD in your hand.

i'll never buy an electronic delivery. with a bluray i can watch it whenever i want to, i can loan it to a friend to watch, i can sell/trade it if i don't want it anymore.
if it's an electronic delivery, i'm sure they are going to put restrictions on it. like it will only work for your player or you can only watch it x number of times. it's more of a way of control than anything. if i buy my copy, i want it to be mine to own. not a borrowed piece of material from some studio.

of course its more profitable, no manufacturing costs, no shipping costs. The question though, is will people embrace it, and if they do, will it be dumbed down movies as far as PQ and AQ.

Digital Downloads are far from taking over. the only advantage i see over disc based media right now is TV show seasons. i do like how i can buy one episode of a TV show instead of the whole season. other than that. DDs are pretty much useless to me
