Maybe we'll see Casino in the top 10 at amazon when it gets closer to release date. I just ordered mine a couple days ago. Big hit with outstanding picture equals huge sales.

This will set sales records for anything yet released in High Definition format, let alone blu-ray. It may not trouble the number of DVD sales, but it will register on the sales Richter scale, no problem

One for the HD-DVD brigade to bury their heads over; there is nothing they can do or offer to rival this one. And if any of them say they are not bothered this is blu-ray only, well, come on, that's just a joke.

Let's keep all the Casino Royal reviews linked to just one thread to keep discussion focused. As well as picking apart all of them to see who's saying what.

Great review Ben. I saw the film digitally projected theatrically and knew it had a somewhat grainy look. I just about guessed Peter Bracke's reaction before I read the review. The stylized look of the film conveys more classic feel, despite its modern day setting. As long as the Blu-ray disc translates that look and feel to the home, then that is all we can ask. Movie night next week!

You might be disappointed then. Aside from the B&W opening, the video is hardly grainy at all. Detail rarely suffers though.

You gotta almost feel sorry for anyone that isn't thrilled with this presentation. If the gear can't make this look and sound reference or so near as to be splitting hairs, it's time for some better gear.

Sometimes makes me wonder if the gear has some auto setting that's playing with the images... boosting levels or darkening them depending on the scene..

Bracke again showing his Blu-ray bias. If the film is presented that way in the theater it was intended that way. Why deduct marks for the film makers intentions. I've read 3 reviews and the other 2 thought it looked great, so Bracke , bite me.

It'll be getting perfect marks from us for sure.

If Bracke is setting contrast with a digital using the same recipe as you use for CRT/plasma, that could be part of the problem. Though, he also seems to have something amis with color decoding or space and appears to be losing a significant portion of detail as well based on some of the reviews I've read. He's missed some significant problems in HD DVD reviews too that even show up on 720p displays. Whatever's going on, it's obvious he's evaluating his setup a lot more than the discs themselves.

Could be. While an auto iris tends to make critique of black levels more accurate with some digitals (don't actually know if his display has some type of iris or not), they also have their downside. Anyone using an auto iris needs to evaluate certain elements of the video without the iris engaged and other elements with.
